JoanB wrote:462Tech wrote:Except for the interview on Tuesday nothing else has happened this week. I haven't heard back from the city yet, will follow up next Tuesday. The job is supposed to close today. Nothing from the warehouse job I applied for last Sunday.
I've been noticing a trend lately. I get no calls or interviews on Monday or Friday has anyone else experienced this? My opinion is on Friday people are thinking about the weekend and on Monday they're recovering from the weekend. Any thoughts?
I think that's mostly true, and also the whole week before a holiday. Must be nice to have no sense of urgency.
May have been wrong JoanB. I had a message on my answering machine yesterday afternoon. It was from the city HR. She needs me to bring in a form verifing my military service (which is no problem), she asked if I had an honorable discharge, I said yes and that I'm retired. She said great and that I can take the pre-employment drug screening on Monday when I bring the form in. So I'm 99% sure that I got the job. I went on the city's website this morning and the job I applied for is no longer listed.
This is a huge burden lifted off my shoulders. The job doesn't pay much, but it may lead to better opportunities in the future.
I want to thank those who gave me advice and encouragment in the short time I've been on this forum. Thank you.
The only advice I can offer is to hang in there and keep trying because something will present itself. May not be the ideal/dream job, but it's a job. If a 45 year old ex-bomb loader can do it, so can you.

I've been working a temp to perm position for the past couple of weeks and on Monday I got a call from another employer and to make a long story short I accepted a full time permanent position in my career field and I just took my new employer's health assessment on Friday and orientation starts on August 1, 2011 and my first day of work is August 2, 2011! I'm over 40, overweight and have some health issues. I was so thrilled to leave Employee Health Dept with my New Hire package of paperwork to be completed before orientation! There really is hope for us all!!!!

I got a job interview monday for this company called Executive Flight. They transport high-profile people, and cargo and etc..Since I once worked for Japan Airlines and was supervisor/flight attendant I know how this business works somewhat..im so excited! very good pay and health benefits! But Im sure like so many others, im not the only one fightin' for this job. After losing everything I had in Japan Tsunami and got new and nice things this would be what you Americans say "icing to the cake" Will be my first job in a foreign country (to me)

Thats great Tomoko! good luck
Sorry to hear you lost everything in the tsunami, that must of been very scary for you! We all watched in horror here in the USA...felt so helpless not being able to do anything. Nothing can stop mother nature which is what makes these extremely frightening. I hope you are able to recover quickly.
ongoing prayers

Re: UF2's job prospect thread. Share your stories!
Well I spent a good part of this very hot weekend sending out resumes. A friend came thru with a small loan to keep me afloat for a month and then today I got a couple of rejection emails and a call about a second interview I had a few weeks ago. Being unemployed since 2008 this was the FIRST second interview I've gotten. I crossed my fingers but as time dragged on I had to realistic. This is a small relatively new company offering no benefits (which i desperately need with an $8K dental bill) and a major pay cut. If they were going to hire me they would have made the decision sooner because there is no large hr structure to go thru, so the writing was on the wall.
Just last week total desperation has made me look at jobs beyond NYC. I dont drive so that is a major obstacle as well. I went to school in Boston so I've started applying for jobs there.

I did the drug screening yesterday. Lady at the clinic said that they should have the results this morning (not that I'm worried). HR said that I got the job providing I passed it. I could start on the 1st or on the 15th at the latest. So I guess I'll be sitting by the phone until I get the call.

For anyone who is scheduled for a drug test or think they may be, don't eat poppy seed muffins or poppy seeds in anything else like salad dressing.
Good luck to everyone!

Thanks. Seven weeks wasn't bad. I remember when I retired in '08 I was looking for three months before I landed a job.

Re: UF2's job prospect thread. Share your stories!
Had interview this morning. Woke up with my usual feeling of dread & wished I didnt have to go. Hard to psyche oneself up for rejection, but since I had to borrow money again I forced myself to face the music. Walked in door & was concerned b/c NO ONE lokoed older than 30. But the person who interviewed me seemed to be nice & thoguhtful & NOT condescending. She concluded by saying she liked me and whe has interviews thru next Wednesday when she will pass on some people to meet with the big boss.
Have to be honest & say under normal circumstances I would probably not pursue an "executive assistant" position but nothing is normal about this situation. If I am lucky enough to make the cut I will be there & do whatever is necessary to secure a paycheck.
Long hours, lots of travel, which have never been my thing but again I'd do it!

Re: UF2's job prospect thread. Share your stories!
I really hope that it comes through for you, nfpexec. Of couse none of us are getting what we really wanted, just what we can get for now. The thought is discouraging, but the alternative is even more so. And you know what? I've had a lot of jobs in my time, and I don't think a one of them turned out to be anything like what I expected them to be. They tell you one set of things, and when you get there, they've changed their minds, and you're doing something else. Sometimes it's better than you thought, sometime worse. So I guess that I think the thing to do is to get into the place, and then find out for sure if you like/hate it.
But anyway, I'm hopng for you that you at least get a chance to find out.

Re: UF2's job prospect thread. Share your stories!
Thanks Joan I appreciate it. It was funny there were times during the interview that I almost felt like the interviewer was speaking a foreign language I felt so detached from the workforce. Almost 3 yrs makes it difficult to feel up to date.
I was asked if I had experience making international flight plans, was a good writer & editor, had written grants, had done scheduling, was available to travel extensively from Oct. thru April, knew how to use an iphone, ipad, blackberry, pc & mac, how to use word, excel, powerpoint, indesign, photoshop, illustrator and had ever done yoga (the owner does yoga).
It aint easy. Then I got this email from a different place:
While we were compelled by your candidacy, we won’t be able to proceed to the next round. Your experience does not seem to emphasize some of the background or skills that this position demands. Because we received a very large number of applications, we’re only moving forward with a few candidates whose experience is a potentially perfect fit.
The employers are holding ALL the cards. What is a "perfect" fit?
