Re: 20 % of Americans Struggle To Buy Food
I will say sadly, at 7-11 we throw away food like crazy. We have to follow procedures and throw away sandwiches that are a day old because we get them "fresj" everyday. Even cookies and brownies and other deserts are thrown away. I suppose that is good since America likes the word FRESH, but I thought of giving it away to local charities but we can't because if someone gets sick. Yet, if someone buys a sandwich and keeps it in their refrigerator for a few days and then eats it, will they get sick. Most likely not. Everyone with common sense knows things don't go bad two and up to three days but but the crows/ravens and sea gulls get a feast at our dumpster, which is another story and quite funny. No one wants to throw away the breads and sandwiches when they're lurking over the dumpster, the movie the Birds comes to mind but I 've dumped them and the birds never bothered me, so I open the plastic around them--wouldn't want the birds to choke on plastic--and let them have their feast.
As for the hot foods, I'm throwing away pizzas and wings every two hours unless we have a rush for those things then I don't worry about it. Not to mention the hotdogs and tequitas.

The food business is very strict about that. And the store itself has to be squeaky-clean (floor, counter, utensils, etc). If someone gets sick from something you sell them, or if a store fails inspection, they can be shut down for good.

Re: 20 % of Americans Struggle To Buy Food
We have been through how many presidents, and years centuries, etc. and people are struggling, we should have survival down pat by now. We, Americans are run-of the mill, right off the conveyor belt, so much box, cans are made and thrown away everyday. Having food should not be a problem as well as jobs as everyone is working. Immigrants come over they should get the generic most basic foods.
No one should play around with our health insurance either, you're sick go to doctors. Not a citizen of U.S. we treat you, and send you back, we have no extras as we are struggling to eat and live.

Re: 20 % of Americans Struggle To Buy Food
Here in IL more people are on food stamps than they are working. Unfortunately, IL has a roublesome food stamps to jobs ratio. Food stamp enrollment has outpaced job creation in IL by a rate of 2-to-1 since 2010.
IL has suffered the worst post-recession economic recovery of any state in the U.S., with nearly 300,000 fewer Illinoisans working today than in January 2008. In that same time period, more than 740,000 Illinoisans enrolled in the food stamp program.
We're also lagging way behind the other midwest states as far as jobs go.

Re: 20 % of Americans Struggle To Buy Food
Um yes, that is why SO MANY PEOPLE are on food stamps. Now how to find out to start a government program for women that have no cash/no job/no unemployment benefits . . . .and need monthly pads. . . that is what I need to start. I can't tell you how many times I panhandled in March 2012 just to get $12 so I can get pads or toilet paper.
but everybody wants to give away free food to homeless they forget that a woman bleeds each and every single month . . until she's 50. People forget about that little fact. .

I indeed think there should be a government program for women with no resources. All the 99ers should pay for it.

Thank you for pointing that out.
