Obama: Time to 'seize the moment' on debt and deficits Empty Obama: Time to 'seize the moment' on debt and deficits

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has said negotiators will have
to shift their focus solely to increasing the debt ceiling if they fail
to make significant progress by the end of the week on a larger deal
cutting spending and raising taxes.

The president, however, made it clear at Thursday's gathering that he
opposes a short-term deal -- an option being promoted by House Majority
Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virginia -- and still wants a package that trims
the federal deficit by $4 trillion over roughly the next decade, a
Democrat familiar with the talks told CNN.

Administration
officials also discussed extending and possibly expanding the payroll
tax cut -- a nod to sagging employment figures -- as well as extending
unemployment insurance, the Democrat said.

Saw the press conference. Yes he did say EXTENDING UI benefits would help the economy and help people keep a living quarters and put food on their tables. Why is the follow up question NEVER asked, what about those hit the hardest, without benefits now for 17 months?? MAD

don't go jumping at the words extending unemployment insurance! It isn't even on any table and its just a part of a speech of ideas from the pres. also IF IF IF there was mention of an extension it would re-extend the extensions for those who are newly unemployed! If I understand it right, anyone who becomes unemployed from now will only get the 26 weeks from their state. So you can bet extension talk is only a renewal of the tiers 1-4 ...Those who are unemployed before these extensions expired will continue to get them until Dec 31st..If Obama bailed on the 99er's when he sided with repubs. on the tax credits and got them to approve extension deadlines to Dec 31, and left 99er's out of picture, then why would anyone think he will do anything for 99er's ??? IMHO!!!
Oh! no where is there any agreement or consideration from any repub. even mentioning extensions! This is just Obama's pipe dreams. No repub. is going to vote for extensions when they are fighting cutting deficit, not raising the debt limit, and cut spending! This was just a speech he talked to reporters to say what he would like to see!!! He would also like to see tax hikes and more, Lastly, he'll cave to some extent to the repubs.

1208, there was a statement from a republican shortly after Obama made this speech that said he would gladly extend benefits if cuts were made elsewhere. It somewhere on this site I believe. It still doesnt mean it will happen.

I dont understand how they (GOP) can use unemployment as a talking point (IE Boehner asking Obama "Where are the jobs?") and then ignore the unemployed, it makes no sense scratch

I keep wondering what would happen if they just declared debt forgiveness all the way across the board-globally, and to include nations, states, businesses, corporations and individuals. Nobody owes anyone anything as of a certain date. And everybody is provided with enough bitcoins to kickstart their new lives.

No money exchanged, no adverse effect on the debt ceiling, and isn't mandatory, can opt out.
