14 months later and I finally landed a job!
Dear Gang,
On Friday I went to a Working Interview. I had never heard of a working interview before. It turns out that it's a way for an employer to get a half days work out of you for free and if you can do the job and they like you and the stars align just right you may got the job. I Got The Job!
I am totally thrilled but also extremely nervous. I so overdressed on Friday. (Business suit, heels, pearls) The boss told me he runs a casual office. (That was his way of telling me I was overdressed.) I have worked for large corporations for so many years that I've been dressing in Business Professional attire practically all my life! I'm not 100% sure how to dress "casual". I think I'll try just a pair of black pants, clogs, and a regular shirt.
It is quite a bit of a drive to get there. It takes about 40-ish minutes. But the pay is so great! Just less than a dollar from what I was making. I was so sure I'd have to take a major pay cut to get a job.
...then there's mother. My mother lives out of state. She's in her 70's now. She has no concept of economics or any clue as to this DEpression we're in. I told her I got a job. She said, "I'm so pleased! Will you be making more money than your last job?"
"Not quite mother, but it's close."
"Oh. What's the matter? You couldn't get more?"
I don't think there is any person on this planet that can take the wind out of my sails as quickly as my mother.
It's a temp to perm position with an expected raise if/when they choose to hire me on. Can you imagine? A real full-time job that pays well? Wow. I'm still... I'm just... I'm speechless.
It's a small office. There is no break room. No vending machines. I have to buy food to take with me. I can't exactly afford to waste six bucks a day to go out and buy lunch.
I am so nervous. I know I can do the job. It's a computer platform that I am familiar with. It's in accounting. I've done accounting for 15+ years. (alright, 20 years) I can do the work.
Will I get lost trying to get there in rush hour traffic my first day? Will I be late? (I was actually an hour early on Friday... I hung out in the parking lot in my car.) Will I be overdressed or underdressed? Will my stomach growl while sitting next to my trainer? What's it like having to eat on a schedule again? Will I get tired in the middle of the day? Will my dog miss me? I'll miss my dog.
Oh my gosh. It's been so long. I'm excited and nervous at the same time.
I am not even going to think about my mother. See... I'm back in the working world again! Take that, mom.

Too funny, you must be the light of the party, or whatever that expression is again. A big congrats to you, and getting paid just a buck less is absolutely fantastic in this crappy economy. That alone should make you feel thrilled. You will do terrific, and I will be crossing all fingers and toes that they get you on permanent status with benies very soon. Best Wishes.

Congratulations! That's encouraging - almost the pay you used to make! I would be happy to do that right now. Unfortunately, they're offering $20K less than what I was making in my industry! And no one else will look at me.

YOU got the GOLDEN TICKET (or at least half of it!)
Loved your post, especially the 'Mom thing' --- how true! Hoping your new work family is a 'good fit' ? Isn't that what they always say to us!
You will be FINE and DANDY, just be kind to myself as much as possible and put the past behind you. Don't even TRY to explain to those who don't GET IT?
