WA state: 7,000 people scammed $14M in unemployment checks
Washington state investigators say they've identified nearly 7,000 people who lied and cheated last year to fraudulently collect unemployment checks, a 56 percent rise since 2009.
Last year's alleged cheaters collected more than $14 million in benefits, the state Employment Security Department said Tuesday.
"It's not completely clear whether there is more fraud, or we're just getting better at uncovering it," Annette Taylor, chief investigative officer for the Employment Security Department, said in a statement.
"Probably a little of both."
