Unemployment rules can disqualify domestic abuse victims in Florida
In 32 other states, you'd be eligible for unemployment, because those states say leaving a job because of domestic abuse is "just cause." It is a "compelling family reason" that drove your decision to quit and, consequently, those states say you have not voided your right to collect unemployment.
But in Florida, women -- or men -- in that circumstance are disqualified from receiving jobless benefits. Quitting a job because of domestic abuse is, in the eyes of Florida law, the same as quitting because you don't like waking up early.
