Weekly First Time Claims jump to 418,000
In the week ending July 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 418,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 408,000. The 4-week moving average was 421,250, a decrease of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 424,000.

Re: Weekly First Time Claims jump to 418,000
I'M right again! Another jump! Wonder if pres. made a speech last week when they dropped and said we are on the road to recovery, and now hello! The recovery ended again in one week! But its just a bump in the road! Man, he should be on thin ice! Nothing positive happening in the unemployment picture over the long term. But yet no new jobs, no steady growth, and yet no help with more weeks for 99er's and others and not a mention of renewing the tiers for newly unemployed! Is this guy really awake!

Re: Weekly First Time Claims jump to 418,000
I think we all knew this was coming, 1208, even the President. He has acknowledged the need for extending unemployment benefits, including 14 additional weeks to Tier 1 for the 99ers.

If they don't get this debt ceiling mess straightened out soon, there are going to be 3X as many "first time claims" in the coming weeks.

It shouldn't be a shock to anyone given all the reports of who is laying off and how many.

I can definitely relate! Things are getting worse every day. As far as that article goes regarding 99 weeks causing depression - don't let it get you down. Consider the source - Fox News.rprp wrote:Oh, this whole thing is such a mess it just makes me want to cry. Sleeping is my favorite time of day. Can anyone relate?

Hey, this post has kind of got us!!! Meaning that if we say no way!!! Give me more weeks then my morale will ride high, like we're happy and not looking for work! And we're getting paid to stay home! But take away our 99 weeks and we're cured. bad person!

Yes, consider the source. But can Fox News purposely put something like this on this forum? That article made it sound like if only we'd get off our duffs and accept $30K (well, it actually DID say that) we'd all have jobs. Just how does that compute when there are not enough jobs to go around? More paid propaganda. The "Dr." works for Fox News!
Anyway, I never thought I'd live in poverty. My SIL got a job for Apple and forced the company to hire her two sons there so now that family is just fine. My other brother is rich and doing just fine. My sister is employed as is her husband and at least employed. I feel like a big time loser. Maybe I am preaching to the choir on the feeling like a loser part and I apologize if I am wrong about this. It is just tough to go through day after day.

Yup, the figures continue to remain high. One week, the numbers go up a few thousand, the next week, they go down a few thousand. This economy's going nowhere!

So your brother is rich but you are struggling? That sucks he should be able to do something to help you out. Just hang in there, we all feel like a loser a lot of the time.
Does your SIL work for Apple Retail? How does she like it?
I have a final interview with them tomorrow.

interesting article http://www.blindbatnews.com/2011/07/what-economic-recovery-weekly-first-time-unemployment-claims-go-up-experts-surprised-again-unemployment-really-at-20/5680
What Economic Recovery? Weekly first time unemployment claims go up, “experts” surprised (again), unemployment really at 20%
Posted on July 21, 2011 by Aaron Hutchins| Leave a comment
The U.S. Department of Labor reported that first time state unemployment claims jumped by 10,000, to 418,000. The numbers are for the week ending July 16.
The previous week’s drop in first time claims is due to the shortened work week (July 4 holiday). That means it’s very likely that the first week of July could have seen an increase in unemployment as well.
Once again, many “expert” employment annalists did not expect such a large increase in unemployment claims, for the week ending July 16.
The latest weekly first time unemployment claims numbers, continues a trend, now 15 weeks on. 15 weeks in a row that first time unemployment claims is above 400,000.
The current official unemployment rate is 9.2%. If our government was using the same unemployment rating system that was used during the time Bill Clinton was President, then official unemployment would be at 20%!

RI dropped one tenth of a percent, to 10.8%, but had 1,500 more job losses and a greater number of unemployed people this month than last. No clue how they do the math!

yeah consider the source"fox news". I heard a discussion on the economy and all the bull that continues and there was a dem. commentator and a repub. along with the host discussing jobs, economy etc etc!!! The dem. lady was defending Obama and the economy and said things were not that bad and under Obama jobs has got better and said there was jobs out there and companies were making profits and the stock market was higher than ever... .HELLO! The fox host said to the dem. " the companies that are making money and the stock market is up because of companies STAYING LEAN! And not hiring also said they're benefiting from this economy...BY NOT HIRING BUT MAKING PROFITS BY STAYING LEAN AND GETTING THE WORK DONE WITH LESS!!! Sounds like dem. hype and Obama big blue sky speeches have worn off as I predicted!

Re: Weekly First Time Claims jump to 418,000
The math has always been ridiculous, add this, subtract that, if it rains add more, if traffic is heavy subtract 10. It's no wonder they have yet to predict with any accuracy the claims prior to their release, it's even scarier that they are responsible for keeping records on it. How many of us would still be employed if we missed the mark this many times and it was know publically??? Answer 0. It's a disgrace. And the unemployed, long term unemployed and 99ers skills are getting stale????
Oh, let me not get on the soapbox and spare you all.

So you are agreeing with the article published by Fox News that the reason for high unemployment is because we had 99 weeks of benefits? That is what the article was about, if you read it.exhaustedandtired/1208 wrote:yeah consider the source"fox news". Re: Weekly First Time Claims jump to 418,000
I said I WATCHED the discussion... Nothing about reading!!!! Therefore I heard what I heard and saw! A dem. defending big business and profit making and buying into the stock market during hard time and making hugh profits! Thats what most liberals on here has criticized was BIG business making hugh profits! But it came from the mouth of a liberal dem. who likes to knock big business and wall street when they make big profits. The moderator took a stance not customary with repubs. and reminded her that the profits were at the hands of the unemployed and they were reaping big profits and buying into wall street by NOT HIRING!!!! Meaning the dem. commentator was making it sound good how the economy isn't that bad if/and when big business and corps. and wall street is making big profits and buying into wallstreet due to a good economy. Thats when the fox commentator said" Its because they are doing more with less by not hiring". That is correct!!!

So now that the official rate in New York is 8.0%, not the 7.9% previously reported, shouldn't NY start offering EB again?

Watch for updates from the DOL here. NY and DE may have EB reinstated. The state unemployment rates were just released by the US DOL and states base their EB eligibility on this report.TruthBTold wrote:So now that the official rate in New York is 8.0%, not the 7.9% previously reported, shouldn't NY start offering EB again?

I agree corps are making big time cuts. I think the rate in PA will be going up over 8 within the next month or 2. I just know of a lot of places laying off workers.
