More people sought unemployment benefits last week, the second rise in three weeks, a sign the job market's recovery is slow and uneven.

Applications for unemployment benefits jumped 25,000 to a seasonally adjusted 429,000 for the week ending April 23, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the highest total since late January.

Just gotta love this economy and administration! lol When and where will a champion for the people shake things up beside Bernie Sanders from VT? You have to admit the willingness to ignore the reality is quite impressive! What a Face

As I said in reality, Obama is powerless because he makes no attempt to use his clout on the oil crisis and simply does nothing but he appoints a phony commission to check for fraud and the results of that will die on the vine also we probably will read about politicians on both sides having their hands in the oil buisness. . Like some oil company is stupid enough to single handed going to cause oil prices to rise to make gas go to 4.19/gal. . All that did as in a lot of his speeches and actions is gives us the feely good approach. His motive from failure is "Give em' the feely good speeches" to tide them over from the true reality and that is nothing is getting better!!!

Lastly, The gas prices is only going to make things worse. More and more lay off's to come. But Obama is selling the idea that the economy is rolling and things is so much better! Right! I have an oil well I want to sell you!Watch , the layoff's are going to get worse over the next couple of months. because when things go up to offset the added expense of running a company or business is to do what??? Layoff to offset expenses. That is the quickest way to cut cost of doing business. Here comes the cycle again! Not good news for Obama...

I also find it strange that when unemployment claims dropped to the 378,000 mark the unemployment rate went to 8.8% from 9.6%... But now unemployment new claims is back over 429,000 the unemployment is at 8.8%.

I believe the answer is in the last paragraph in this article. It states that a little over 100,000 people were not collecting UI - the difference from last weeks figures. Very Happy

Small business is already laying off. Flower shops cannot compete with the high price of gasoline. Drivers, and assistant floral employees are getting laid off. Only the Manager/Owners are taking calls, and the customer doesn't like the increase for the fuel charge. Some are advertising no fuel surcharge, and staying afloat by delivering themselves, etc. And, this is only one small business I've used as an example. This is going to cause a double dipper for sure.

Its coming!!! Even if I try to show consideration for Obama, he has covered up, softened up and made so many good feely speeches and as I said in te past and say now is, it will catch up to him. As smart as he is he should figure that out. It isn't speeches that solve problems , Its results. Americans listen to speeches and yes they get excited, after all he is president. But when they do not produce consistent results then Americans are not the fools they want us to be!

It isn't just the small businesses that are hurting. Read this thread about a statement from Wal-Mart's CEO:

Post by Dazed&Confused Thu Apr 28, 2011 5:35 pm

Just looked it up and it is the 3rd week, what difference does it make, one more week going above 400,000 on the 4 week moving average tells us and the government thing are getting extremely bad. Seems we've been told, front and center, there are no jobs. Since someone made a 1,000 mistake last week (Probably Pennsylvania) they have upped it by 1000 people, a mistake from last week. Wonder how many mistakes they make, probably a lot, probably hire people, give them a math exam, and if you fail you are hired.

The government determines the Transportation fuel surcharge, this ain't gonna be good.

Also, Gov. Corbett opened the mines and logging industry again, which had been closed for years. This happen last year. Pay was $10/hour. I just read an article where there has been a death in these dangerous mines. He had them hire 13,000 just to lower he unemployment rate. Gov. Corbett was it worth it? Dazed&Confused

These rise in the first time claims reports won't be included in the National Unemployment Rate until the figures are released in early May.

They showed the drop in unemployment from 9.6% to 8.8% when unemployment new claims dropped and it was in he middle of the month! The drop was four weeks to five weeks ago! down to 379,000. thats when they said unemployment fell to 8.8%... So I guess they show lower unemployment when they drop at anytime but if the unemployment goes up then they wait til the new month to show the rise!

Post by jmainframe Sat Apr 30, 2011 4:46 am

I'm thinking most of these first-time claimants are from the public sector, with the push to balance budgets and/or cut spending at all government levels.

429,000? That's a terrible figure. That's the figure that was being reported throughtout the depts of the depression, er recession. But how can that be? The recession ended June of last year!

We MAY be in the midst of a true double-dip depression/recession (call it what you want), triggered by, you guessed it, HIGH ENERGY COSTS!
