During the recent recession, unemployment rates among women were less than men. According to Nancy Folbre, an economics professor at the University of Massachusetts, “Because men tend to work in more cyclical industries than women, they have historically lost more jobs on the downturn and gained more on the upturn.” Interestingly though, as the economy has improved, it is women who have outpaced men in employment.
