All well and good if you have no mortgage, no real credit card debt, and a rainy day savings account but realistically how many people have that kind of luxury?

I agree 100%. Most were already in serious debt and upside down on their mortgages.

It does help if you are in good financial shape before being laid off. My mortgage was paid off and I had substantial savings. Unfortunately three years later still no job and savings are depleted. Still no jobs in my field.

I agree w/ chopthis, most people -- unfortunately -- are a couple of paychecks away from disaster.
