Desperate Times
I am new to this site. I have been a f**k up all of my life but always had a job since I was twenty. I have been unemployed since March of 2011. I can say that I understand what everyone is going through. Fortunately, I still have a roof over my head and food on the table, which is little but enough from going hungry. As of today I have 20 dollars in my name. I have tried to find employment here in California, it's beyond frustrating.
I will be heading to Alaska at the end of December for a six months tour as a seafood processor. It is a dirty job, but it is a job and it is better then nothing. For anyone out there who is desperate as me, why not try the seafood industry. I tried it out, went there in the middle of June and came back in August. Can't say I look forward to heading back there, but I don't have any other option at the moment. They are hiring right now for the A season which starts in January. I just wanted to put this out there after reading through the forum, thought it might help someone.

Re: Desperate Times
You gotta go where the employment is... you might just find further work in Alaska while you're there. CA is pretty bad right now.
While your home base (home) is CA, consider being paid on a per diem basis, which reduces your taxable income and provides a higher net pay - all legit per Federal IRS guidelines - with no impact to the employer whatsoever.
Good luck!

Re: Desperate Times
welcome to the forum.....
i understand there are also very good paying jobs in the Oil fields around Montana...(the shale fields actually, i think)....
I am 57 and probably not capable of what is most probably strenuous work...but for anybody 40 and under there are some jobs in these more remote areas...
and who knows with a little industriousness, and a few years work maybe opportunity to move up the ladder much more quickly
good luck and please keep in touch

Re: Desperate Times
Thanks for posting about this opportunity. I wish you the best in this endeavor. I think it's great you have the flexibility and mobility to be able to uproot and pursue this. As your thread title states, desperate times do call for desperate measures. Best of luck to you!
