Extend Federal Unemployment Insurance past DEC 29th 2012 deadline
Unless Congress passes legislation that would provide federal extended unemployment benefits for 2013, there will be no unemployment compensation beyond the 26 week maximum state unemployment benefits next year.
Please sign this petition to extend the Federal Unemployment Insurance past the DEC. 29th deadline.

We will be lucky to see Congress reconvene after the election, never mind get anything done. Their track record for getting things done in a timely manner, especially for the unemployed is not very good, and will be even worse in a lame duck session! Please, don't count on anything happening now, prepare the best you can by cutting back now, and take any job you are qualified for.
By the way, is there anything in there for the "99er", the people who have been hurt the most by the great recession?

Does anyone have the numbers? How many people this will effect? I am not trying to be positive, I am planning on not getting anything, but I want to look at it as a black and white issue. We know many in Congress don't care about us, but I'm wondering if the numbers are high enough, if the more compassionate ones will, or if the numbers are low, they will just cut their losses and toss us to the wolves.

many of us don't believe the "numbers"....but NO I don't have them....
Ohio where i live just hit less than 8 percent officially.....
when the smoke clears after the election i am kind of hoping the extensions would be extended for an additional 20 weeks...(when they expire at end of 2012).but maybe that's wishful thinking

Be prepared without being unsure that EUC will not be continued past 1012. Unfortunate but reality.

I guess my point is, if this is going to impact 10 million people as opposed to 1 million, they might be more apt to act. I'm not talking about the 26 weekers. I'm talking those on EUC currently.

Do you know how many they have excluded in the past 4 years? Many more than 10 million!
Benefits will not just "shut off" at the end of the year. Those on a federal tier on 12/31 will FINISH that tier but are not eligible for anything after that. Ten million are not going to be cut at once, the numbers will stagger over the first few months of 2013.

That's exactly what perplexed me, Desperate. I know how many they've left behind over the past 4 years, but that many at once would quite possibly cause an actual rumble in the media, and I couldn't see them risking that.
It makes more sense that people will finish their tiers than having everyone be cut off at once.

Where are you getting this information? Everything that I have read indicates no further federal payments regardless if you have a balance or not. I was a 99'er, got a job, got laid off AGAIN. Now, I'm just finishing out my first 26 weeks. I'm really worried...can you site a source for your info please?

Desperate in RI, here is what PA Labor and Industry page says,
"After week ending Dec. 29, 2012, EUC benefits are not payable regardless of any remaining balance on the claim."

Re: Extend Federal Unemployment Insurance past DEC 29th 2012 deadline
PLEASE CALL THEIR OFFICE!! Federal benefits are still payable until you exhaust the tier you are on after Dec. 29. Does PA still have extended STATE benefits? If so, that will stop immediately. Please see a schedule of the phase out at Unemployed Workers.org or NELP. This was the compromise Congress worked out in Feb. in order to continue EUC08 through 2012. The last weeks payable under the federal program are in April, 2013.
I strongly urge you to call your unemployment center. The info you quoted above is NOT accurate.

NELP says -
In contrast to previous reauthorizations of the EUC program, the February legislation did not allow for federal UI benefits to phase out gradually. Under the current law, all EUC payments will end abruptly for all claimants on December 29, 2012. This hard cutoff also means that unemployed workers who lose their jobs in July 2012 or later will only be eligible for regular state benefits (26 weeks in most states) and will not receive any federal UI payments.

If you became UNEMPLOYED after that date, you were not eligible for EUC08. Those unemployed before were"grandfathered" in, but the last date to claim these benefits is in April 2013.
