I wondered--if you've been on the extensions this whole year, would you even file with the state at all?

I do believe you have to file as UI is treated as "unearned income" and does not even count towards your EIC......
under ronald reagan UI was made taxable, more trickledown economics

I would think that if you are on the extensions which are Federally funded, you'd file the Federal only?

It varies from state to state. There is definitely a Federal Tax, but many States are not collecting tax on UE, some are. Best to check with your service centers.

Did you mean money owed to state unemployment or money owed for state taxes on unemployment?

In Ohio, in the past if a person had a problem with an overpayment of UE benefits that person was penalized the next time they opened a claim and the overpayment was deducted from the new claim as well as some type of penalty....
Currently the OHIO UE website says that the overpayments will be witheld from fed tax refund throughTOPS program...
before it was a State matter, it is now a fedral matter it would seem...
(probably because of fed funding the benefits)
