In South Carolina, The Plot To 'Welfarize' Unemployment Insurance
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/20/unemployment-drug-testing-south-carolina_n_1217217.html?1327071998The politicians pushing drug testing disagree. In South Carolina, where the unemployment rate is is 9.9 percent, well above the national average of 8.5 percent, Republicans want the nation's toughest requirements: blanket drug testing of every applicant for unemployment benefits and compulsory volunteer work for the long-term jobless.
"I think we have a responsibility to be very conscientious on how we spend the dollars we take out of the taxpayer's pocket," state Sen. Kevin Bryant (R-Anderson), a leading proponent of drug testing, said in an interview.
The Republican presidential candidates also support drug testing. Newt Gingrich said he favors it for any type of government assistance. So does Rick Perry, who dropped out of the race on Thursday and endorsed the former House speaker. While former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney hasn't talked about drug testing, he does advocate radical changes to the unemployment insurance system. And a Romney spokeswoman sent The Huffington Post a 1994 news clip that said Romney supported drug testing for people on welfare.
Pharmaceutical companies will make BIG money in RI! Our state unemployment rate just rose for the second month in a row to 10.8%!!!

These People are just a big bunch of clowns in the circus called GOVERNMENT. I don't agree, however, It wouldn't bother me if I had to get tested. I don't do drugs regardless of what they may want to think.
Congress should also be included in drung testing....I know Gingrich wouldn't pass because everytime he opens his fat azz mouth he sounds like he's tripp'n. Makes no sence.

It would bother me. Getting UC shouldn't mean giving up your Fourth Amendment rights.
Funny how right wingers are all about the US Constitution...except when they're not.

Joan....Don't get me wrong...I don't agree I was just saying that If I were forced to, They wouldn't get the outcome they hoped. Not everbody that receives state or federal aid is a druggy or alcoholic.
If I were forced to be tested I would come back negative. I had my time 25 years ago...NOW don't want it....what I want is a job
I do think however, It should be mandatory for any Federal Office held. Congress Needs to be tested.

It's like the republican claims of voter fraud that is running rampant! Yet only one is on the books. I'm sure there is someone that is collecting unemployment that does drugs. Let them drug test everyone. Then when it comes back clean let the leaders that implement the assanine policy pay for the test themselves! Not the public...

It's all about the money
1. If these state lawmakers are so concerned about "spending money wisely", how are they going to find the money to pay for all this drug testing ?
2. Which drug testing facility in the state is going to perform the tests? Could it possibly be the one who has contributed large amounts of money to their campaigns ?
3. On the paltry amount of money that is paid out in unemployment benefits to recipients in South Carolina(Low wage state) what makes these lawmakers think anyone could even begin to afford to buy drugs ?
4. Make them work for unemployment ? Someone needs to explain to these ignorant, phoney southern jerks that Slavery was outlawed a long time ago and that it is NOT coming back---EVER
!!!!!!
This is just another phoney Right Wing disgusting attempt to deflect blame for their destruction of the economy and the middle class and at the same time further demoralize and demonize the unemployed. Classic
legal tactic,(remember they are all lawyers) want to deflect blame off yourself ? BLAME THE VICTIM.

there ya go again....making logical connections that make sense.......
Pols rely on EMOTION laced rhetoric...witness all the "coded" language to stir up fears and such....
In the 1930 America had radio demi-gods, these are not a new phenomenon, however real politicians ran the other way from thier endorsement.....
Now we have our rushs and beck's and they control one political parity
That is a direct result of FCC deregulation
Its much much easier to appeal to peoples baser fears that to educate them
