Bill would link North Carolina Unemployment Pay to Community Service
RALEIGH — A state Senate bill would require volunteer work for people getting more than two months of unemployment insurance benefits.
N.C. Sen. Andrew Brock, who represents Rowan and Davie counties, is one of three Republicans listed as primary sponsors of the legislation. It would require five hours of volunteer public service per week from weeks nine through 52 of benefit eligibility, and 10 hours per week starting in week 53.

This is for people who are receiving benefits. I believe the individual can choose where they will do the 5 or 10 hours of service.
In hindsight, I really wish RI had done this. It motivates people to get out into the community and be part of society, instead of feeling helpless and shut out. It is going to be pretty hard when I do finally find a job to re-enter the real world again. Long term unemployment tends to make a person a recluse, leading to deep depression and anxiety.

I'm pretty this is against the rules for unemployment insurance. I don't think they can make you do anything that didn't have to do with your old job or a job search. This will never pass in NC anyway.

Does this include welfare too or just unemployment? If it's unemployment should also be welfare. I don't think in theory it's a bad idea but if it costs the person money like gas or bus fare it's not cool.

It would include any money that the government gives you.

So in other words politicians would be required to do volunteer work too? Yeah right.
