GOP working on unemployment reforms
"Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), a former House member who opposed extending the benefits last year, said he would support an extension this year if it was paid for and reformed the program to ensure that certain individuals do not receive the money.
“Like all the people who have been collecting unemployment who are in prison, like all the people who are collecting unemployment who are on disability, all the people who have an adjusted gross income larger than $100,000 a year but [are] still collecting unemployment,” Coburn said. “If we paid for it and made 95 percent of the money go for the unemployed, instead of consuming it in the bureaucracy in getting it to them, I could vote for that.”

Wow, that made sense. He eluded to it yesterday on morning joe, and a few other things. He also sounded like someone who got the message loud and clear that the American ppl are sick of the Congressional Road Show.

Of course, pple making 100,000 per year pay into the fund, so if they are laid off, they are entitled to monies they have paid into. Too bad he doesn't feel that way about millionaires and billionaires paying their fair share.

Yeah, I'm not so sure that provision is such a good idea. Sort of like means testing for SS and Medicare--they want to start doing that to whittle away at it here and there until whoopsie, it's a welfare program, and we hate it, so let's axe the whole thing! Better to have everyone pay into it and everyone benefit from it.

Re: GOP working on unemployment reforms
Well we have all heard the line "I'd vote for it if is is paid for" please nothing is going to pass thru this congress. The do nothing bunch will continue to do nothing. Besides I think if you are unemployed and under the 99 week extension you should be cut off just as I was and try to make ends meet, pay bills and continue to live. If there are any extensions to be given. The 99ers should be the first to get any assistance period!!!!!!!!!

Re: GOP working on unemployment reforms
Is everyone making calls?
They have set up a seperate number in DC to call for an unemployment extension. Call >> 1-888-245-3381 <<. When prompted, enter your zip code and it will give you options as to which of your House and Senate members you would like to be transferred to. 99ers fight for HR589. NON-99ers fight for HR3346. This number is solely for UI. Get your friends and family to make calls for you too. CALL NOW!
