Re: 5.9 QUAKE HITS EAST COAST; PENTAGON, CAPITOL BUILDINGS EVACUATED
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44245009/ns/us_news-life/#.TlPvWl1uAWsThousands of people evacuated buildings across Washington, D.C., and New York City on Tuesday after a moderate earthquake in Virginia that was also felt as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C.
Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were among the areas evacuated.
The earthquake’s epicenter was between Charlottesville and Richmond, Va., the USGS reported. It was a very shallow quake, 3.7 miles deep, which would explain why it was so widely felt.
According to CNN and MSNBC, two nuclear plants have now been taken offline - North Anna near epicenter. Also, some damage to the National Cathedral in DC.

Rhode Island State House was evacuated after the effects were felt here.
PROVIDENCE --
The Rhode Island State House was evacuated Tuesday afternoon - and workers in the state capital emptied into the streets - after an earthquake hundreds of miles away in Virginia shook desk chairs, rattled windows and frayed nerves around the Ocean State.
State police Col. Steven O'Donnell said the State House was evacuated after an earthquake was reported in Virginia at 1:51 p.m. O'Donnell, who recommended that anyone who felt tremors should go outside until further notice, said building inspectors would be making the rounds at city and federal buildings to make sure they are safe.

Thoughts going out to our Moderator "X", who just started a job in Richmond - the epicenter of the quake. Hope he checks in to let us know he is alright.

I'm guessing he's all right-from all reports I've heard, there was just minor damage and no casualties.
We felt it all the way out here in Pittsburgh--floor and walls were shaking for about 10 seconds. I knew what it was after about five and considered bolting and then remembered I'm old and slow and it was kind of pointless.

I was at work when it happened, about less than an hour north of Pittsburgh, but we didn't feel anything. Word of the earthquake came via a phone call to our supervisor. They said on the news tonite that the last time we experienced an earthquake in the east of this magnitude was in the 1800's. Now we have the hurricane to come up our coastline by this weekend.

I bet the Repukelicans are probably blaming Obama for the earthquake.

Thanks, Joan! We are worried. We felt it all the way up here in RI. I guess Providence is on the fault line and downtown was evacuated. Just worried about the people closer to the epicenter.

It's been confirmed that today's shaking of Washington DC was not, in fact, due to a 5.9 earthquake, but was actually due to our founding fathers all turning over in their graves.

Anything can happen between now and then. Probably just rain where I'm at.

It was a weird experience, as a New Yorker this was not something I was used to, but was relieved when I turned on tv & heard it was an earthquake. I was shocked because this is NY but I was glad to have an answer as to what happened because all kinds of strange scenarios went thru my head. At first I thought it might be a ruptured gas line because Con Ed was working in neighborhood and that has happened in the city before.

Re: 5.9 QUAKE HITS EAST COAST; PENTAGON, CAPITOL BUILDINGS EVACUATED
I felt a quiver, I was sitting on a chair drawing, I took up learning to draw better to get my mind off the situation I'm in, its cheap all it takes is a pencil and paper, and I felt my body shake, I thought I was havng an epileptic siezer, though I'm not epileptic, and walked to the toilet and saw the water sloshing. So I thought Ok a big truck went by or a sonic boom of some sorts and I too turned on the tv and saw that it was an earthquake centered on DC VA area. I thought it was interesting, NY is on a fault line. I"m on Long Island and it only lasted a couple of seconds.

We initially thought the rumbling was caused by a plumbing and heating company working in our building. LOL We know all about Con Ed problems! We lived in NYC for 45 years.
