House passes GOP debt bill over objections of Obama, Democrats; Senate votes to table
Today 8:23 PM Senate Votes To Kill Boehner's Debt Ceiling Plan
Final vote is 59-41.
Today 8:15 PM Conrad: McConnell Won't Negotiate With Reid
During an appearance on MSNBC on Friday night, Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) said that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that he would not work with him to negotiate a compromise to raise the debt ceiling. According to the North Dakota Democrat, the Republican leader indicated, however, that he would be willing to engage in talks with the president.
Today 8:10 PM House GOP To Vote Down Reid's Debt Proposal On Saturday
The House will hold a Saturday vote on the debt plan offered by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) just to show that it can't pass, a senior GOP aide said Friday.
Brad Dayspring, a spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), took to Twitter with the news.
"BREAKING: House to vote on @SenatorReid's Debt Ceiling bill tomorrow - will show not capable of passing," he tweeted.
The GOP plan is largely for theatrics; their aim is to put on full display that Reid's bill, in its current form, lacks the support to pass the House. News of their plan comes at the same time the Senate is lining up a Friday night vote on the House GOP debt plan, which is expected to crash and burn in the Senate.
The House is scheduled to go into session at noon on Saturday and move to vote around 1:00 p.m.

The Boner Bill was dead in record time by the Senate! Perhaps it should include free Viagra, next time. They could take it from Medicaid, then it would be paid for!
"I put my neck out." The weeper of the House said.
Congressman Weiner knew what to do and had to resign.
It is not your neck, stupid!

One thing (among many) that's bothering me about this, though, is the way both sides are being characterized as equally butt-headed. It's just not true:
The repugs are using the threat of burning the house down so they can steal all the silverware and jewelry. The dems are ceding them bits of this and that in the hope that they won't torch the place, but are just now (hopefully) setting a limit for what they won't let those miscreants get away with. One side is way too conciliatory but the other is just plain criminal. There's a big difference there.

give me a break! Thats why nothing is getting done! BOTH need to give to a balanced and acceptable deal. We all should know that measures MUST be taken. But the repubs. want to go to far and hurt the poor and stand for rich and the dems. don't want to accept anything that needs to be done. GIVE both ways I say! You and all knows this is the only answer!

I hate to say this but its true! The other countries are laughing at us and we have no more clout. We are a joke with no respect. But what kind of leader do we have. Its his watch no matter what one says! And he really hasn't done much to earn respect except bow apologize.

And none of this is the Tea Party's fault? Come on, 1208, what is Obama supposed to do? He is trying to negotiate with terrorists!exhaustedandtired/1208 wrote:Jobless_in_Ma wrote:So. Where does this leave is as a nation? This posturing is hurting us all.

Yes, the pee party is a group of arrogant people who have life made and its their aim to do anything and everything to preserve them but who cares about the elderly, SS people, and unemployed. They will soon find out they don't run this country! Nor do the unions! Its about Americans and not a group of selfserving people!

I have lost all confidence in our government. Get ready folks we are headed for another great depression. I just have a bad feeling that history is going to repeat itself. Congress and the Senate can't agree or compromise on anything. What really makes me mad is the fact they are going in at noon today to vote on the Senate's proposal. NOON?! Are you kidding me? These guys should have stayed late last night and been in early this morning to find a solution to this problem. That's the problem they just don't care.....

But the dems have given in..and given in...and given in, especially Obama. And the Republicans keep saying it's not enough, we demand more cuts and no raising taxes on the rich or closing their loopholes. If you don't realize that, exhaustedandtired, you aren't getting the whole story. It's always very appealing for some reason to blame both sides equally, but in this case, do to so is very naive and uninformed.
Unions...well, you know what I think..your animosity toward them is misguided. I see first-hand what they are trying to do for those people you name. I wish you would reconsider your position because the deck is so stacked against us that we can't afford to reject allies, particularly ones that are organized.

I am in no way defending them at all. But I watched CNN last night and apparently they were burning the midnight oil during negotiations. They may have been there all night. I haven't turned on my TV yet. I do know it is a bill that won't pass, just like Boehner's, so it's pointless to have a vote. They know that but are still working on it. I personally do not like Reid's bill. There are no tax loopholes being closed and no revenue changes.
Look at how similar both bills are:
http://www.christianpost.com/news/boehner-vs-reid-on-the-debt-ceiling-53094/
This one line sums it up: Tea Party Republicans do not like either bill.

Re: House passes GOP debt bill over objections of Obama, Democrats; Senate votes to table
Well the blame game childish antics didn't work. What's next? Asking where's the jobs didn't do anything. Obama, McCain, Gibbs and others put a band-aid on the unemployment problem and told us that retraining is the answer to unemployment. Really???
"O" said become a teacher America needs educators. Not everyone can be a teacher. Learning to speak Chinese is another important issue ,... right!!! GE's moving another division to China. These are good things for the *US* economy? How many times are we going to be sold the we need bridges built and roads need repairs, ya know the dead horse subject "shovel ready projects" that's become a laughing matter. The #1 thing that should have been done from the beginning of this current administration is job creation, not the health care crap. We can't live on health care. The millions of unemployed shows the proof. The republicans that won't support unemployment extensions aren't helping anyone but themselves and the financial backers and perks are their main focus. The corruption in both parties will ruin this country. There doesn't seem to be any agreement on anything other than letting China own the *USA* and we lose our nation to the communist. I don't want China's control, I like the freedoms here and I feel that's where things are headed or the jobs moving to China wouldn't be tolerated by all parties and they should unite and take a stand against any company selling out the *US* to China. Who can do that with Emmelt on your team? They all need to do the job that they're paid to do with their self voted outrageously based pay. Their job wasn't about how much money to make, but to work for the constituents. We are real living beings and our lives have purpose to us. The problem is we aren't millionaires and in their eyes, ...IMO... we have no purpose and nothing to offer so why bother helping anyone except for the elite. The *US* as I knew it is going down. If you're not rich, we're screwed.

I respect Jerry Nadler at least for his interview! He said the debt crisis isn't the priority... UNEMPLOYMENT is the crisis!

There are many people that have said this, many, many economists feel this way and have said it on every news station that will listen, that's the problem, no one is listening.

This is a tough question nutty. I tried to do some research on this and I could not find an answer. Number one, I am 90% sure a deal will be made.
Bad news if it does and that is a real small if. I think everything will freeze. They have no control on what checks are cut so I think they will freeze them all
I really don't know for sure but I will keep looking into it.

Every state runs their program differently. Mine don't go in until the 3rd. If they don't strike a deal, I am not sure how they will determine who and in what order things will be paid out. I would imagine, since they say it all the time, the President and Timothy Geitner will make that decision. If I hear anything, I will post.

So basically there is no change in the status quo? I get so confused trying to follow all of this I admit when my brain is focused on getting through the day and doing the most mundane of tasks. When there is something definitive I hope it will be translated into English that the average American can understand.

"We're a long way from any kind of a negotiated agreement, but there is certainly a more positive feeling about reaching an agreement this evening than I've felt in a long time," Senator Richard Durbin, the No.2 Democrat in the Senate, told reporters late Saturday.
Numerous reports, all citing anonymous sources, said the White House and Republicans were discussing a plan to raise the debt ceiling by up to $2.8 trillion and making cuts of about that in two separate chunks. The Associated Press and The Washington Post reported a lower figure for the increase in the debt ceiling of $2.4 trillion.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, pushed back a key procedural vote on a debt limit plan by 12 hours to 1 p.m. EDT Sunday, buying additional time for both sides to hammer out details before Asia markets open.
"There are negotiations going on at the White House now on a solution that will avert a catastrophic default on the nation's debt," Reid said on the Senate floor late Saturday.
"There is still a distance to go," he said.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43949638/ns/politics-capitol_hill/
I watched most of this last night. Senator Reid postponed the vote until today so the Senate could vote on it with their minds "fresh" and give them some time to think about it. It is basically the same plan as Boehner's that was shot down in the Senate on Friday. A two step process to raise the debt ceiling before the Asian markets open ( ) and then the discussion on what programs will be cut. Yes, Social Security and Medicare are on the chopping block. What I got from it so far is raising the age to receive Medicare to 67.
Once again, they are catering to Wall St. and screwing Main St. To say I am disappointed in this is an understatement.
