What's Wrong With America's Job Engine?
From the Wall Street Journal. This article is worth reading all the way through to the last paragraph. http://heh.pl/&3lX
Wary Companies Rely on Temps, Part-Timers, Hire Overseas
Over the past 10 years:
• The U.S. economy's output of goods and services has expanded 19%.
• Nonfinancial corporate profits have risen 85%.
• The labor force has grown by 10.1 million.
• But the number of private-sector jobs has fallen by nearly two million.
• And the percentage of American adults at work has dropped to 58.2%, a low not seen since 1983.

Re: What's Wrong With America's Job Engine?
This is insanity! How can we compete with this?
Hal Sirkin of Boston Consulting Group says rising wages in China are dulling its edge as a low-wage nirvana. In 2000, wages of Chinese production workers averaged 3% of what their American counterparts made. Today, they are at 9%
Re: What's Wrong With America's Job Engine?
I'm wondering what will happen when the Chinese workers begin striking to get better wages and work conditions? And you know it will happen eventually. The corps will then begin to look for the next Big Thing (starving, 3rd world country).

Re: What's Wrong With America's Job Engine?
It's only a matter of time before all this happens. Companies moved to Puerto Rico and Mexico for cheaper wages and they got them, but then their wages started rising and culturally, they work differently, not bashing them, but production in those two countries hurt the companies that took their work there. I know, I worked for a company that did it and it was back in the US after 3 years.
They won't be looking for the next big thing as you say, if they finally pass legislation that prohibits it.

I read somewhere that if China's wages raise 10% it will be cheaper over all to build things in America. They have now reason 7%. Will they move to America? No, they will go to Vietnam or some other east Asian country. If republicans hadn't blocked the outsourcing legislation last year it would have been against the law to outsource today.
If only voters had been a little smarter last November.
Well, you know what Thomas Jefferson said "The government you elect is government you deserve".

I wrote a lengthy post on this in another thread, but you really hit the nail on the head in one short sentence!
