Consumer confidence drops as concerns grow over high unemployment Empty Consumer confidence drops as concerns grow over high unemployment

Consumer confidence dropped in early July to its lowest level in more than three years on growing concerns of persistently high unemployment.

Consumer sentiment decreased to 63.8, from 71.5 in June, down to the lowest level since March 2009, according to the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary index released on Friday.

Economists had expected the index to climb to 72.5.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told lawmakers on Capitol Hill this week that there's a lack of "confidence in the durability of the recovery" and in consumers' "own income prospects."

Confidence will only get worse as the ones that still unemployed come off their exhausted extensions. With 16% or more without regular Full Time Employment, what do the Republicans expect.

This only proves that a big stimulus needs to happen. This time it should be with jobs, not extensions. Get people to work. It would help the mood of the country. They are wasting valuable weather. Need to put young people to work. Even if it is tearing down old buildings. Repair some for the homeless. Why do you want people to live out on the streets?

Need to create jobs for all ages. Construction jobs are not good for older worker and college educated workers.

Some women of any age should probably not be doing heavy construction work. They could do the cooking instead. I hope I will not be picked on. Consumer confidence drops as concerns grow over high unemployment 482574

Well, it's good to know that at least the average person isn't totally oblivious to the unemployment crisis going on all around them. On the other hand, whenever someone mentions to them how difficult it is for the long-term unemployed to get a job, they always act so suprised and puzzled. Maybe that's their way of trying to distance themselves from the problem.

A huge infrastructure project is needed and there would be plenty of work for all types of people. Engineers, architects, administrators, secretaries, payroll specialists, purchasing, expediters, receptionists, benefits coordinators, accounting people from receivables, payables, to controllers etc. Our infrastructure needs are in every state and every county, municipality and city. Sewers, power grids, bridges, roads, buildings old and new that need retrofits for energy efficiency, fire safety. These need exist in all states, counties, municipalities and particularly in major cities, old major cities particularly. Something of this magnitude would take years and need the help from all types of workers. As it picks up, restaurants, banks, big box stores, manufacturers all gain as spending goes up and then they hire to handle the workload and increase their businesses.

We would be shocked if the Department of Labor told the truth. Actually there are more people out of work then the Great Depression. When have you had a politician said this one?

You are correct. Actually, they (the corporations and government) lie about everything.

I agree with Hunter. I think possibly they are holding on to cash, not hiring, hoping to get the Repubs back in power and are then hoping for the promise of additional tax breaks. Now, that Corporations are allowed to contribute directly to campaigns, they "vote" just like everyone else and never under estimate the power of the Chamber of Commerce.
