BOOMER SHOCK: For boomers, a shock wave is about to hit
http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20110612/NEWS/106050348&cid=sitesearch
The cushy retirements of travel and leisure we once counted on?
Forget 'em.
We'll be scrambling for jobs — with old-age ailments like arthritis, in an economy still wheezing from recession, in a job market flooded with kids hungry for the security their tapped out boomer parents can't provide.
This is my local paper.

That's scary. At least the kids from the "Great Depression" before this one, had a happy ending. Help arrived, and everyone benefited. In this Depression, everyone is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Help deliberately isn't arriving, and I can't begin to imagine how insecure that is making the children. I know what it's doing to us, though.

Back to communal type living that's for sure. One of us knows agriculture, one of us knows carpentry, one of us knows medicine, etc. You get the picture. We will probably have to pool our resources together in every small/medium sized area in the Country. Big city living is where I think it's going to get really, really scary.

Retirement will likely not be anything anyone younger than Boomers (I am Gen X) will know. I expect to be working into my 70's. Good thing healthy people run in my family.

Re: BOOMER SHOCK: For boomers, a shock wave is about to hit
on the new movie "Wall Street" (starring michael douglas and shia labouff) He called the next generation the "Ninja generation" NINJA=NO Income, NO Job, NO Assets, because of the current economy. They will have it pretty tough over the next 10 years or so. A college degree doesnt mean much if there arent any jobs.
My oldest daughter is 15 yrs old and cant even get a job bagging groceries at stop and shop. Her and her friends want to work so badly, but there is NOTHING out there for them either.
Although I agree some kids are spoiled compared to how we lived but if you think about it they are just complying with the times. Cell phones, laptops, Wii, Xbox, Ipods etc...all things we didnt have growing up, but as silly as it sounds, are things every teen MUST have now a days.
The kids I know want to work for their own money, but the jobs arent there for them. I am assuming its the same for college kids.

Re: BOOMER SHOCK: For boomers, a shock wave is about to hit
I am unemployed on top of that I have a son turning 18 soon. My child is scared; he's seen what's happened to me. I spent my whole life telling him a lie-hard work pays off. This making fun of people for living with family will have to quit being a part of American culture. People will have to share housing, the kids have no way of supporting themselves, and the little bit they do make can be combined with parent income so maybe the family will survive. I've told my husband that I will not "punish" my child with lectures and humiliation the way the unemployed are because he can't afford to move out. Nor will I force him to keep a child's rules because he is "under my roof." He has a right to adult privileges and so forth regardless of the fact he may have to stay home. It's miserable enough to not be able to get out there and start a job etc. without your parents lecturing you about it. He's trying, we're all trying. We get enough lectures from congress (intentionally uncapitalized).

America, you sound like a great mom and you get it. I think we will see more examples of this.

It will be weird "letting go" I kept such tight tabs on him growing up, but as long as I know when he is missing long enough to alert the police, I think I can do it. It will be a very strange transition, it is even when they're living someplace else. I don't want him running off and doing something stupid because I made him miserable here. I will still make him take out the garbage that will be his job UNTIL HE IS DEAD. Just sayin'
