Why I like my pets more than my family
My pugs and my 3 legged tailess cat (no joke) always love me, they don't ask me how much I made this week or if I have "really" been looking for a job. They are always satisfied with whatever I am eating as long as I share. They love me when others simply want to criticize and offer useless advice. That's why the only thing I buy that isn't off brand is pet food. I may not get a physical this year but they will have their heartworm medication. Their sweet faces and kisses remind me there is a GOD.

My pets are part of my family. They are the reason I keep going through this undmployment hell.

My family is generally supportive of me except, it seems, when I really need it. My dad is always full of good advice like "What you need to do is find a job".
Gee dad, is THAT what I have been doing wrong all this time? I wasn't aware that once I lost my job I needed to find another one. I wish you have told me that sooner.

Me. There are resources out there for pet owners too. I would have given up a long time ago if it weren't for mine. They don't care that I don't have a job. They don't think I am lazy or useless. They love me for what I am. I will NEVER give them up or abandon them.

Our pets keep us going at home. My kids and I would be lost without our two dogs. Most of my 2 legged family think I should give them up and use their food money to pay bills with. I will sell almost everything in my house first. However, my brother does have a heart and helps me out with dog food. He has been where I'm at and knows that at the very least the kids should not lose their furry friends at home!!!!!

Well, I applaud you for that. And hopefully it never comes down to having to surrender them. But my Wife and I have volunteered for a local rescue here in NJ for about 4 years now. We foster one dog at a time until they get adopted. This last sweetheart of a dog, a Rat Terrier, has been with us now for 9 months. Although we already have 4 of our own, he I think at this point is going to become ours. Point being, we only foster smaller dogs. Probably about 15 of them in the past 4 years since we started. We had a few 'failures'....meaning we fell in love with them, and adopted them ourselves (hence we went from 2 to 4 dogs). But of the 15 we successfully adopted out, all of them adopted in a month or so or less. This is a definite sign of the economic times. And when we go down to the Humane Society to pull a dog, the scene there wants to make you cry. The desperation. And people losing their homes, and having to give up their animals, as many rentals will not allow pets, or they have to move in with family or friends who cannot have their pets with them. Its a horrific scene.....

I have 5 dogs- 4 of which are strays, and 3 cats all strays. Just thrown away to die, but they live the life now. Funny they could not care less if we have cable-they just want love and to share whatever you have-truly fur angels.

Re: Why I like my pets more than my family
My cats eat before I do. Affording them doesn't cost all that much, and "getting rid of them" wouldn't save me that much money. And they're the only people who like me. Everyone else thinks I'm a stupid, lazy bum. They think I'm mommy.
One was a pet cat surrendered to the shelter. Another was a stray tom turned into the shelter. Two were feral kittens, taken in by a shelter to socialize and adopt out. One was a shelter cat, a beautiful purebred Ragdoll, who had obviously been starved and beaten. The last one was a big striped tom cat, angry at the world, who just turned up at my back door one day.
Useless throwaways. Just like me. We belong together.

Re: Why I like my pets more than my family
The sad thing is that most employed people don't understand that many of us had cats or dogs before we became unemployed, just like many of our other material things...so what do we do with them now...kick our family pets out the door and let them fend for themselves? Can't afford to have them put to sleep, it costs an arm and a leg even when you're employed. I don't like the idea of having to spend my little earnings on pet food...but I don't have a choice, it's actually cheaper than having them put down. Certainly the fact that I love our two cats doesn't help either. But apparently all the employed people must think that the minute we lost our jobs, we should've held a yard sale with all our material things, along with our pets.
