Shortening Federal Unemployment Benefits Will Help Jobless in U.S.
Recoveries from most recessions since 1980 have taken place with unemployment compensation totaling 39 weeks to 52 weeks. Given the difficulties of getting new spending measures approved in straitened times, Congress would be well advised to adopt the 39-week standard for 2012, providing an extra 13 weeks of federal support beyond what states provide.
As matters stand, extended federal benefits are due to expire at the start of 2012. If nothing changes, jobless claimants next year will face a bare-boned 26 weeks of coverage under standard state benefits. That’s not enough, especially because laid off workers in some states will face even less. Florida and Michigan are among states that will shorten maximum benefits next year, in response to budget pressures.
By limiting benefits coverage to 39 weeks, the federal government would free many billions of dollars that could be used to more effectively put people back to work. We will spell out promising ways of doing so in a coming editorial.

I would never wish unemployment on anyone, but if I did, these arrogant, out of touch, inhumane, wordsmiths would top my list. Do they speak for their readers? If so, it reflects badly on America's business community.

This is just more TPers propaganda. They are just mean spirited. I would wish Unemployment on to them, I have no pride left! What is good for us is good for them. Share and share alike as they say.

Yeah, just like when benefits ran out for the exhaustees, they were all able to find jobs. Give me a break. How can you find a job when there are no jobs!
I said in a prior post, and I forwarded it to Annette Bernhardt, labor market research expert at NELP, that a study needs to be conducted showing how exhaustees STILL can't find jobs. This study needs to be shoved down congress' throat. This is the only way they'll understand that cutting off benefits DOES NOT get people back to work.

Why have UI at all. Then we could quit our jobs at will and find jobs the next day.

This is the right wing reasoning for ending all entitlements.
How soon they forget how we were all contributing to the economy and lining their pockets.
Obviously with 4.65 people for one low wage job we would ALL find jobs.
Duh.
