Are my job skills useless?
Three million job openings remain unfilled in the U.S. as companies claim workers simply don't have the right skills.

The author is a regular on the unemployed forums. Very well expressed.
Your skills are never useless. It is the market where you live that makes them not in demand. Too many times these job posting are asking only 3 years experience. In reality it is over 10 years and being picky. The workers are not being picky. Employers don't want to train properly and expect you to hit the ground running.
Even if you try different things and work temporary or contract. Life is HELL right now. We have a Congress that does nothing about everything the unemployed needs. We have been totally ignored! The problems could easily solved by people with a grade school education.
It is not a lack of will. The rich control everything. We must kiss their butts as they steal our Social Security and Medicare. They don't want to play fair. There goal is not to pay taxes and have us as their slaves. Their Healthcare plan is to let millions die for no reason.
If your past 50, no matter what your is skill. We don't want you. It is their attitude not the unemployed as they twist the words and spread the myths.

IMHO, your skills AND EXPERIENCE are never useless. Believe me, you forgot more than they'll ever know! Keep that in mind. Don't let them (company HR reps, employment agency reps, family members, friends, etc.) make you believe otherwise.

Re: Are my job skills useless?
I agree skills and experience are never useless. We are living thru a very difficult time with shifting priorities. We did everything right and in the middle of the game, they changed the rules and didnt bother to tell us.
Years ago I was thinking about leaving a job and told my bf at the time that it was a total waste of time. He told me that no job was a waste of time because with each job there is something you learn that can applied in the future. I tried to approach every job since then with that mindset. It's frustrating when you cant gain traction and its natural to turn that anger inward but you have to step back and remember its them not you.
Unfortunately we dont have the control in this situation so we have to figure out how to use what we got and make it relevant to what they want, no matter what it takes since we have to work. Now i struggle with that everyday and now I'm back in school (i'll be paying student loans when i'm 90) but you have to adapt to survive.
Something like age we can't control but we have to work with what we got.
