We didn't leave the two major Parties, the two major Parties have left US!!
There are a number of Republicans (and Democrats) who will view my switch to “decline to state” as a net gain for the Democratic Party. However, I reject the theory of zero-sum politics which claim we live in a binary world of Democrats and Republicans, where a lack of support for one side works only to empower the other.
Having now been active in both major political parties, I’ve discovered the common prohibited activity is critical thinking.
President Ronald Reagan once famously said, “I did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me,” and I can now say that I have been abandoned by both Democrats and Republicans.
In order to stay true to myself, my family and values, the only rational, responsible option is independence.

I have a friend (former lawyer) who is disgusted with politics. She refuses to vote for either Republican or Democrats. Instead she writes in the name "Willie Nelson". I am considering a change from Democrat to Independent as I am thoroughly disgusted with both parties.

It has become a power struggle more than a congress that is there to help the people. They are so power hungry that they forgot why they're there to begin with. Its past time to remind them!!!

It seems to be more about personal egos than the "people". I agree with s&t, we need to remind them why, how and who is reponsible for them having jobs.

I used to be a hardcore Democrat as in I was asked to be a precinct captain and even run for various political positions. Important politicians in Illinois told me they had hope people like me were the next generation of Democrats. I was involved with every campaign from local to president and even attended the big Clinton party the night he was re elected. I defended the Democrats to everyone saying the Republicans were scary.
Today I am now a registered Independent and switched from Democrat. I do not feel the Democrats have anyone in mind except themselves. I realized having met many famous politicians that in fact it's all about them getting elected and their buddies getting in power. It has nothing to do with anyone else. They care more about the corporations who give them money than the average person on the street. They don't care about people. I know someone will say the Republicans are worse, which they are, but I'm speaking as someone involved in politics.
I often wonder how older politicians think about how their parties are now. I've heard both Carter and Ford have expressed disgust with how their parties have turned into what they are now. I suspect FDR (Democrat) and Eisenhower (Republican) are rolling in their graves.

I am also a registered Independent. Both parties are pathetic and care about nothing but getting rich before they get booted out by voters.

Yes and I would also say that Ross Perot was right too. Too many people thought of him as a crackpot but he had it right about NAFTA.
