It's All But Over Empty It's All But Over

Post by nfpexec Mon Jun 13, 2011 3:25 am

I hate to be negative but I really am feeling numb at this point. I've gone back to school, have a 3.7 GPA but I can't take much more. I need a check, any amount as long as it's steady. I've stopped signing petitions, advocacy and everything.

I need oral surgery and have no money. This dental problem would never have gotten this bad if I had a job and insurance. I had to buy dental insurance which means forfeiting medicaid since I can't have both. Yet mediciad didn't provide any care for advanced dental problems so I had to choose between my medical & dental health.

In the last 3 years my entire life has crumbled, so I don't even listen to what the gov't says anymore. I'm in desperation mode, unemployment ran out last year and I am like a time bomb ready to go off.

People are even more insensitive to our plight. I had a nasty email exchange with someone tonight who said "everyone has issues," as if 3 yrs of unemployment is a little bump in the road. I had two interviews two weeks ago after nothing for many weeks and I felt I nailed both. I was prepared, qualified and have heard NOTHING. I totally related to the CBS report on long term unemployment and baby boomers. I don't have any energy or hope anymore. I've been fighting this uphill battle for 3 years and there is no light and I am drowning. I don't see any way out anymore and I'm wondering why I care. I can NEVER replace what I've lost especially at my age. I just don't know how or when ALL will end once and for all.

Im so sorry, nfpexec. Im sure many feel the same way. All I can say at this point is that we are here for you. Try not to give up hope. Hope is what keeps me going. you are in my prayers.

about the medicaid....My husband is a union member and they continue the health insurance throughout unemployment. It doesnt cover everything, so medicaid gave us what they call MassHealth in my state, as a secondary insurance. So whatever our ins. doesnt cover, masshealth picks up the rest (accept for dentures, they dont cover them) have you asked them if you can have the medicaid just as a secondary ins.?

nfpexec,

I know it sounds trite in light of your situation but please don't give up hope. For some of us its all we have left. Having a medical problem on top of being unemployed I'm sure feels like a slap in the face. Just know that you are not alone even when it feels like you are. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have hope. It's what motivates me to keep trying despite constant employment rejections and excuses from recruiters.

It's All But Over Empty Re: It's All But Over

I understand how you feel. I have been looking for full-time work for almost two years. All I've had is part time jobs that have not been a good fit for me and a seasonal job that I liked, but was over after the holidays (I'm hoping to go back there this holiday and possibly get a promotion to assistant store manager or manager depending on who else comes back). I have a job in my area of interest, but I am self-employed and the status is month-to-month, so although there are perks like working from home and setting my own hours, there is also the drawback of not having insurance and the worry of being told I am no longer needed at anytime.

I just got a rejection letter from a company where I thought I had a REALLY good interview. I should've known something was up when the person in human resources did not return my follow up phone call, but I held onto hope anyway.

I have two more possibilities in the pipeline, but they are working for a portrait studio in a department store (which would at least be CLOSE to what I want to do) and doing an internship where the pay is commission only. I will likely take one of them if offered to me just to have something else for my resume, although I must admit the internship would be more ideal for me.

I just don't understand how I could be told I am smart and reliable and told that my resume looks good, and then no one out of the hundreds of jobs I've applied to seems interested. And of course people continue to insist WE'RE the problem. It just gets tiring.

I know -you know us unemployed people aren't really looking according to the a**holes in the news and Congress. I apply for job after job until I can't even find anything to apply for that week. But I have to listen to people tell me I'm not trying. I'm done with that, the next person that says that to me will sorely regret it.

I WISH I had a part-time or temporary position. Anything that legally brings in some cash. I've exhausted ALL resources. I owe everyone I know money and have no idea how or when I can pay it back.

I finally got 2 interviews and after the sounds of silence, thought this was a game changer. I had a glimmer of hope which has been dashed since I haven't heard ONE peep since the interviews & have none lined up. I feel like a leper. My skills are rusty, I've lost my confidence.

At one time I was the executive director of a non-profit organization but I don't think I am capable of stepping back into that life now. I'm unsteady, unsure and second guessing everything I do. I truly don't know what I am capable of doing after almost THREE years of unemployment, stress and rejection. I have completely lost who I used to be.

NO you are still as talented as every. You are not a leper, your skills are still there. Now as to the confidence, I can attest that mine too is gone, and I'm sure it's on a vacation with yours (maybe at a beach?) But, who you are doesn't depend on an economy like this one. The only thing that keeps me going is the fact that I know this mess is not because I am unable-it is because the economy is unwilling.

Yea, that worthless feeling is like a sore that won't heal. Put a bandaide on it, and don't think about it for awhile. Next time you look at the sore, it's looking better. Or, try to think it something like that. There's also that thing where two emotions are sitting on your shoulders, one is the crappy emotion, one is the good emotion. Just knock that crappy sucker off, and stomp his/her ungle butt out.

People, as you know, it's not our fault. We are trying every day and that is moving forward, not backward. Hang in there nfp.

I found this board just googling to try to find out if I was alone in the problem I was having finding work. Thinking it was me was unbearable. When I found this site, I realized that many many many are in the same boat-some with less education, some with much more. Same rude interviews experiences, same no calls, same scams, same comments from people who don't get it, same dealing with the arrogance of some of the employed who are too damn stupid to know that they are probably next. It made me feel so much better and it changed my perspective on my situation-I still hate it, I just don't feel like I have a rare disease or walk around wondering what is wrong with me for hours a day like I used to. I have been told before disgusted with govt. that my personality is well unique. I have just always been a straight shooter-not rude-just not into bs and butt kissing and lying and sucking up and what not. I thought, well maybe, that's what's wrong with me- I can't be a good person, and be honest and fair, I got to be a snake to make it- which I just could not pull off. Now I know that it isn't just me. There's nothing wrong with me except being born in the wrong century.

I did everything right and still am suffering. I went to college and grad school where I made Deans List and 3.7 GPA and did internships. I rarelyspoke up at work and learned new skills often. For what? To be unemployed while my MA degree laughs at me.

nfp you hang in there. We all feel that way some days, as disgusted says, you put a bandaid on it today and tomorrow it will heal some, then the next day a little more. It's not you, there are millions of us, don't second guess yourself, how many people could survive what we have in the last three years? Not many. You are not rusty, just a little shakey, one week back at a non-profit or any full time job and you will find your footing and you will shine!! Don't you ever forget that.

last year i found the forerunner of this site and it was a light in the storm. i found myself logging several times a day to get news and find out what was happening with everyone. when that site morphed into this one i was relieved that i'd still have a support group. however my despair and depression had grown so much and hope was non-existant so i found myself more isolated, rarely went out and stopped logging in here. i dont know what made me log in today but i'm glad i did. i forgot the comaraderie and needed to remember that so many PEOPLE not statistics are suffering the same way i am. my situation hasn't changed but the words from everyone means so much because i go thru everyday with any kindness from people.

Yes, it helps to have a place to go. In the one year and five months I've been unemployed I've only been able to find volunteer work. The volunteer work helps me to get out and it relieves the isolation. There are so many people who are suffering and I am thankful for this website as a place to be inspired, encouraged and also as a place to vent. I also feel better when I email, call or fax on important issues.

nfpexec, I don't know if you saw this, but you were quoted in the "Root", a publication owned by the Washington Post:

When Unemployment Runs Out: Meet the 99ers

Millions of jobless Americans are out in the cold after exhausting their unemployment insurance. Now what?

On Unemployed Friends 2.0, a message board for people who have been out of work long enough to exhaust all emergency unemployment insurance -- "99ers," as some have taken to calling themselves -- users let off steam in the Venting Forum.

I am sooo tired of calling temp agencies week after week with no callbacks or results … I'm burned out from over 2 years of this routine. –503Depressed

This feels like a permanent state. Even though I send out resumes, I don't really think anyone is going to call or that I will ever work again.
–nfpexec

Been unemployed over 2 years, sent out resume to hundreds of jobs, 4 interviews and nothing. Nothing, nothing, nothing. –js123

Please don't give up, be good to yourself today, and try to stay positive. We are all in this together. You are not alone. –DesperateInRI

nfp please hang in there. I know that hopeless sinking feeling that you experience. I know that I feel it almost everyday. I to am a long term unemployed women. I have three kids thank God that my ex has them on his insurance. And I am greatful that my health is still good!!!

I know the frustration with the interviews. I had two in May and before that one in Nov 2010. Before that nothing for almost an entire year. I have some wonderful friends who help me almost every day. I have also walked away from one who does not get it. Anyway I know that each day is very hard. But stay with us here at Unemployed Friends and stay in touch!!!
