MA unemployment agency hit by computer virus, possible data breach
http://tinyurl.com/6ccel32The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced today that the computer network for its unemployment system, including individual terminals at state-run career centers, were hit by a virus from “criminal hackers” last month.
The agency said the virus, identified as “W32.QAKBOT,” may have collected confidential job claimant or employer information from 1,500 state computers.
“It is possible that bank information of employers was also transmitted through the virus,” the agency said in a statement. “Only the 1,200 employers that manually file could be impacted by the possible data breach.”
The agency discovered the virus on April 20 and enlisted security provider Symantec to eliminate the problem.

That is very scary. I can't even imagine the manpower and cost to fix the system for such a large state agency. That happened to my computer on Friday and it took me two days to resolve the issue.
I hope they find the fiends that do this sort of thing. It is such a violation of privacy and a waste of time and money that could be used for beneficial things.

That's weird, Minnesota's was done at least until 1pm on Monday, and then it was touch & go. They didn't say anything about hacking, but they did say the problem affected everything, including the phones. Did any other states have similar problems?
