LIHEAP: Congress, White House Cut Heating Assistance Just In Time For Winter
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/05/liheap-congress-obama_n_1184318.htmlJust in time for the start of winter, Congress and the White House reduced LIHEAP funding by 25 percent. The federal government doled out $4.7 billion for heating assistance in fiscal 2011; the 2012 allotment is $3.5 billion. The cut happened in December as lawmakers scrambled to fund the government before they left town. The result will be less heat for fewer people.

This will directly effect me and my Mom, she has been getting assistance for a few years now. She recieved half of what she recieved last year. With the price of oil at 3.50 cents or so in our area and a 250 gallon tank, thats a real killer to the finances that are already thin.

I havent gone to fuel assistance yet this year. We got a letter saying we qualify for it this year. We made an appt. but the woman canceled because she is sick. I have no clue what to expect, we have gas heat.

I have reeived LEAP here in Colorado. Two payments go to Xcel one in November and the other in February. My LEAP allowance for this year went down $20 to $25 dollars. But without any kind of unemployement and still no job offers I have no choice but to get this help. Thank God Congress did not take this away as they have unemployemnet benfits.
