The real reason conservatives are angry at Obama

Post by Guest on Wed Jul 13, 2011 11:12 am

What Republicans are really interested in doing is cutting the welfare state. That’s why they’re opposed to any increase in taxes, even though the biggest single driver of the deficit is the Bush tax cuts, which Republicans overwhelmingly supported. Despite Krauthammer’s claim that Obama’s interest in the deficit is “sudden,” the truth is that it’s also ”sudden” for Republicans — it wasn’t an issue for them until Obama was elected president. Before then, Republicans were perfectly willing to increase the debt through tax cuts, war with Iraq, and Medicare Part D.

Moreover, Republicans had no issue with raising the debt ceiling without demanding spending cuts when Bush was president. It’s only now that Obama is in the White House that they’re insisting that a debt ceiling hike must be accompanied by major concessions from Dems.

I would add that I think the real reason is they want him out of the white house at any cost - including letting this country go the way of the Roman Empire.

As to the cuts in the Social Safety nets, I just end up thinking they'd like anyone who needs these services to just go away - forever. I think they have decided who is expendable and who is not. They won't be happy until the middle class is completely destroyed and they are well on their way to making this a reality.

Interesting that you said the Roman Empire, rather than the Roman Republic.

Don't get me wrong, I am not faulting you in the least. Your description is exactly correct. But it's worth noting, and worth grieving over, that you and most of the rest of us have accepted on some subconscious level that our Republic is gone.

The American Republic has become the American Empire.

Ave, Caesar! Morituri te salude!
