Are McJobs the Only Kind Left in America? Empty Are McJobs the Only Kind Left in America?

Post by Guest Sun Apr 24, 2011 9:44 pm

Insanity is defined by doing the same thing over again and expecting different results. The government's latest push for pacts such as KORUS and the Trans-Pacific Partnership are proof that our experts and officials have lost their minds as they advocate yet another job-killing trade deal and laud the creation of jobs at McDonald's. The American people are smarter and better than this, and deserve economic policy that creates meaningful opportunity and upward mobility.

Sums up the New America sad to say. pale

Our economy is taking a drastic and frightening shift toward a low-income society that cannot produce and provide for itself. With income inequality rising rapidly, declining employment, and opportunity in America reduced to working for a fast food restaurant, clearly something has gone horribly wrong.

Because neither party cares. The Democrats used to care but haven't since Slick Willie and NAFTA.

A low-income society wouldn't be so bad, if it weren't for the fact that the cost of living in this country was so high. How could you even think of taking a minimum-wage job flipping burgers with $4-$5 per gallon gasoline, soaring food prices, and out-of-control health care costs, just to mention a few!

All this while the rich (the haves) keep getting richer. Class warfare? It's no contest! The rich are holding all the cards, while the poor remain divided and paralized by fear.

This is what infuriates me the most about the economy. People say ohh people collecting UE are lazy.Well then how comes there is thousands of people who are used to there 10hr job applying for these fast food places. My friend manages a mcdonalds and he told me roughly 700 applicants he got for a few positions and he is interviewing now for them and he said u hear the sad stories and pain in peoples voices saying how much they need the job. Just shows help for the 99ers is needed and urgently bad.

My uncle is a manager at McDonalds too Rose, he said the same thing. I asked him how the big hiring day went and he says its a nightmare and that it makes his job harder.

He has to pick a handful of applicants to hire out of hundreds and he also says that the majority of the applicants are desperate long term unemployed. He feels terrible because they are all competing for a job that pays min. wage and is only around 10 hours a week. Most were disappointed to hear there were no full time positions.

Another thing people dont understand about these jobs is that they are very few hours a week. People say "get 2 part time jobs to make ends meet if you have to" the problem is that most of these part time jobs have rotating schedules and its nearly impossible to get the employers to work around another job schedule.

Delko, you are blaming the wrong person for this. You can thank Bush, Reagan and Clinton for what's happening, not Obama. Am I happy with Obama? Nope, but his hands are tied in many cases.

Anyway, I too have heard there are many of people for one low paying McDonalds job. That's how far we've sunk. I remember the "good old days" when I could walk into a McDonalds and get hired. Now, it's hard to find any job. Try being overqualified as I am, and it makes it worse. The manager jobs at these stores are actually requiring years experience and degrees, unlike years ago when anyone could walk in.

He is not the anyone to blame, I will grant that. But he is NOT the wrong person to blame. He shares in this too. And I am tired of him trying to continuously deflect the blame on Bush. Ok, Bush sucked. But he's been in Retirement for almost 2 years. Time for you Mr Obama to show some evidence of progress. Anything. His hands are NOT tied as much as you claim. He had a Democrat majority in the House until January of this year. Why didn't he get them to pass a 2011 Budget prior to the take over by the Repubs????
I also question why this administration in 2009 spent so much time and resources on Health Reform. Not only was this not the priority, and woefully unpopular in the Country (60% disapproved of it), but it also had the exact opposite effect of stalling job growth by adding extra cost per employee...some estimates of $750 month per ee....but of course you know govt estimates, always are low ball. Why on Earth would co's expand payroll not knowing what the over head cost may end up being?

p.s. I too am overqualified. I went from making $91k a year, to looking at $8/hr jobs. Do you really think anyone at low paying jobs like these will even take a second look at me, after seeing my resume? I dont even need to disclose my salary history for them....one look at my resume tells all.

Here's another example. My hobby has always been working on cars. When I used to be able to afford to pay for an oil change or service at the dealership, I used to be able to walk circles around many of these pimple faced service techs they hired with only a high school degree.
I apply to these types of jobs now, even though they dont pay much, because it would be something to get me some income and I would be pretty good at and might enjoy some. I wont even be considered because one of the requirements is "one year of dealership tech experience." And why wouldnt they require that? I am sure there are people in that industry too out of work. So why hire someone with zero experience, when they can hire someone with experience for the same money?
Thats why I always love it when people say....Oh, why dont you think of something you'd like to do, and make a career change? Fat chance of a career change in this job market. Just about every industry, except maybe health care, has a long line of experienced people out of work who will get the jobs first.

It's all BS lies and myths when they use "career change" crud. As long as THEY have their gig, they can spout such stupidity until THEY become the victim.

I got an email from a relative telling me they were hiring all these "professional jobs". I went on their site and found exactly ONE professional job I qualify for. The majority of the jobs were cooks and cashier, not the so called professional jobs.

The real truth they haven't told us is the NEW professional jobs of America are Burger flippers and retail cashiers and that REALLY doesn't work due to the Wall Street geniuses thinking that JOBLESS Americans CAN AFFORD to BUY THINGS so it nullifies the WHOLE hiring Food Service and RETAIL people for these JOBS WILL NOT survive if the REST of us CANNOT afford it because WE have NO discretionary income to spend BECAUSE WE HAVE NO JOBS and if you do IT'S NOT ENOUGH to have the EXTRA things. Yeah real smart business school strategy. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

You are so right on the overqualified situation. My 24-year old niece works as a recruiter for a national company in CA and about two months ago I sent her my resume to see if she could give me some pointers.

Her answer was "you must downplay your experience and qualifications!" because a) People wouldn't hire me because they knew as soon as things get better I would be leaving and b) In most cases I am much better qualified for the job than the person actually making the decision for the hiring. Who wants to hire someone qualified enough to compete for your job in a few months?!

I've heard that too about employers don't want to hire someone more skilled than them. It's sad really that stupidity is valued more than smarts, but look at pop culture which puts stupidity on a pedestal.

I was told that McDonald's was hiring these 50,000 to weed out what they have now. No references, but I think that is pretty believable. Makes them look good too. Also, heard they were increasing prices by 7.5%, at least that is not as high as the unemployment rate.

I remember those days too, anyone could just walk into these types of jobs, fill out a short application, get an interview and get hired all in one quick visit.

I remember a girl I went to high school with (back in the early 90s) got a job at mcdonalds part time after school in her senior year and they made her manager in just a few months. I cant picture that ever happening now!

When I worked at McDonalds most of the managers had only been there a few months. I was told if I was interested to ask about becoming a manager but I hated the job and quit before that. A friend of mine was in college, walked into Hardees and was hired as a manager. Now, the management jobs want experience and a degree. Recently Taco Bell near me was hiring a manager and they required a MBA and 5-10 years experience.
