Frustrated with these people who conduct interviews.

Am I the only one that has gone into an interview only to find that the interviewer has not even glanced over your resume? I had an interview and the lady was way off base with my experience and skill set. It was very frustrating because I spent most of the resume explaining what she shouldve saw on my resume. What a waste of time and energy. After that I went through the changes of revising it again...even though I've had it done by 2 different professional resume writers prior.

I don't think they've ignored your resume, they just want to hear about you from you. These people who are interviewing you have probably gone through hundreds of resumes for that one position and narrowed down their applicant pool based by the skills and experience stated on your resume. That's the way it is here in RI. Too many applicants, too time consuming for the hiring managers.

I think that is the whole problem. From day one, these companies treat you like you are disposable and inhuman. It never used to be this way. Recruiters and Hiring Managers used to make you feel appreciated during interviews even when you didn't have a chance in hell. How do they expect good performance in these kinds of environments? And honestly, even in these times, a good first impression usually means a good business. I have worked for about a dozen places, in half a dozen industries, over the last few years and the ones that didn't seem right during the interview ended up being the worst places to work for. Either bad management or bad work environment... two of those places went out of business.

Yeah, companies have been waiting decades for this, where with low unemployment, employees seemed to have the upper hand. One day though, this will all backfire on them. The pendulum has to swing back the other way eventually.

Like everything else, employer's shabby treatment of its workers is unsustainable.

It is pretty sad that when folks who spend time writting and honing their resume in-order to present it to a potential employer, that the employer doesn't care enough to have someone with interview or hiring skills meet with the potential employee. Just like every other cost cutting measure being used today companies are phasing out human resource departments and allowing some low wage "manager/supervisor" with 0 skills in how to conduct an interview try and fill positions. I agree with what mainframe says that the pendulum will swing back and bite the companies in the ass eventually, but, it wont be for quite a while. With an uncaring government, greedy shareholders and a society that looks at people without work as bums looking for a handout, we will continue to see the whole management/administration of companies decline until slave labor ruled from a few select top executives will become the norm.

Just got off the phone interview for an 8hr a week part time job....

First they e-mailed me, requesting a phone interview and asking for the best time to reach me. After giving them several days and times, she responded back by asking what the best telephone number was to reach me at....DUH...it's on my resume!!!

Secondly, when she did call...she described the job that fit me perfectly. And then asked if I was familiar with certain applications, data entry, and customer service...DUH!...it's all on my resume!!!!

When I told her that I had been a customer service manager...she sound surprised...DUH...it's on my resume!!!!

Come on, people...Give me a break.

When I hired for my dept, I literally took the resumes home to read if there were too many to read at work. Extend yourselves people!!!! Learn from the best of us that are now 40-50 years old...you will learn more than any college could teach you!!!!

I've had that happen to me also. I had another interview yesterday and the man asks me did I feel smarter after receiving my degree. I said yes I do but the best teacher is life.
I was kinda taken back by that question...I doubt I will get a call back for the $10 an hr (which I didnt find out til I got there) job.

$10/hr huh? Rolling back salaries to 1965 levels wouldn't be bad...IF THEY ROLLED BACK THE COST OF LIVING TOO!!

She may have only searched for the key points on the resume that she was trained to specifically search for, and then simply skimmed the rest. Definitely don't take it personally. Just stay strong and keep moving forward.

Saw a job opening to do Laundry at a nursing home facility, and it literally asked for experience; Saw an opening for someone to clean toilets...also asked for experience. Dunkin Donuts also mentioned to me a year ago that they were looking for experience people who worked with food....Duh...I've made many sandwiches and coffee in my life time, as well as bagging donuts in a supermarket.

I've said it once and I will say it again....We can't always blame the White House for all the unemployed...they need to start looking at businesses.

Unfortunately, too true. Businesses can afford to be picky. Gone are the days of taking an awesome person under your wing and investing in their success.

From what I can tell, companies are learning from their mistakes quickly- worker happiness is on the rise after taking a plunge the last few years. Hopefully that means a better experience for us all when we return to work! Yes, I said WHEN.

Well it should be illegal.

I don't know what you referred to as being illegal...but I once called the Labor Board on one of the employers I worked for who was "mentally abusive". All I wanted was information from them.

There reply???? "Every employer has a right to be MEAN, as long as they don't single you out. They have to be mean to everyone."

BTW- sorry for making this thread jump the track, but I have been keeping this stuff in because I am too professional to make petty complaints, but it is obvious that I need to get this out.

I was told something similar by the Dept. of Labor (which I live 4 blocks from) literally days before my boss called me after I left the office and screamed at me and fired me without even resolving the issue. It really is disgusting what employers are allowed to get away with. This same guy I mentioned was so sadistic that he would make sure everyone else in the office was gone before he yelled at someone. Having a private conversation is one thing, but sending people home early just because someone pissed you off is unacceptable! He never had written communication either, it was always in person or over the phone. I cannot wait until he gets caught. He probably has been caught before, hence his caution.

I literally had to explain to him that he can't discipline me for breaking rules before they were put in place. He threatened to fire me because I wouldn't sign a contract stating that I broke some stupid policy on break time. He is such an idiot- he dated the policy and the infractions, so I made copies for myself (just in case) before giving him a politely scathing note about how illegal his behavior is. He was prepared to let me go that day, but I stupidly allowed him to keep talking and he talked himself out of it. I was desperate to keep my job so I put up with things like this for almost a year. I became the office scapegoat.

These companies I have been working for are too small for federal regulations, which is why I want out of these mom and pop operations. These are people who should not own a business, let alone be in charge of anyone. I have had a really bad streak with work environments and it lead me to believe I was the problem, but I went back to working at public schools and have never felt better. I am so thankful that for all the drama teaching brings, none of it is from administration or co-workers. No agendas, just doing the job well.

I feel your pain...I feel your anger, In time you will get over it, and it's good to let it out here and vent, because you don't want to carry that anger all your life.. He destroyed you while you were working there, don't allow him to destroy your life any longer by festering in anger..don't give him that privilege. It took me a long time to get over the abuse of my boss, and the truth is..I loved my job, and the customers loved me..but I was mentally abused every second of the day, if only I could've tape recorded it.

You right....some bosses don't deserve to have their job. The company that I called the Labor board on was known for their yelling and screaming, before I was even employed there. When I had my interview, my boss literally asked me if yelling bothered me. My reply was "no, as long as it wasn't at me." I had heard previous bosses yelling at each other, and it didn't effect me. But when I was told that I had gotten the job, I mentioned to someone I knew in passing that I had just gotten hired...and mentioned what he asked me during the interview. She immediately replied "I hope it's not __________who hired you, because my daughter-in-law just left there from all the screaming that took place." I almost fainted...she literally named the place I was going to work at! lolol.... That should have been enough for me to say " no " to the offer.

But, yes, the Labor Board stated that if you are SINGLED out for any issue, you have a good case...but if your boss basically treats everyone in the same manner, you lose. So, you have to have a lot of proof that it's only being done to you.

I understand the logic that they want to protect business owners from disgruntled workers and let businesses run the way they want to, but if they have dozens of complaints from people, they should investigate, or at least fine these people.

I had an interview just today where I had to explain my separation from this particular job. It was not easy, so I left out the bad stuff and focused on them cutting back my hours. Worst case, I still have my supervisor's phone number for reference. He loved working with me and would probably say good things. I bet he'll laugh if they call because technically this company is their biggest competitor.

Unfortunately when most prospective employers call for references and they ask for your former supervisor, boss, etc., most of them are told not to answer anything, but to refer the call to the HR dept. And I don't believe they can say anything negative about you anyway. But most prospective employers know this, so very few call former employers. They know they aren't going to get the answers they want. ..The best thing you could do, is to ask your former supervisor for a reference letter...and then when you have to explain why you left that company again, you have the letter from him showing that you did your job.

Jade, if your previous supervisor is willing to be a reference for you and you know it would be favorable, I would highly suggest asking him if you could use his name and contact info for your job search.

A former manager is a great reference to have - if you know they will help you not hinder.

I know, its scary to think those are the idiots with a job, and they can't even take the time to look at a piece of paper.
