The idea that We the People care that much about Paris Hilton getting tax breaks, or that she works harder than we do, is absurd if we all had one real white-collar cushy job job that paid a living wage, let alone 80 hours a week of hourly temp work. But what really worries me is this is unsustainable for most people. I don't have kids or debt, but a lot of people do, and they're trapped and losing ground rapidly. So, if this keeps up, and if this temp status becomes standard employment practice in America, it's just a matter of time before millions of families are starving and dying -- and probably fighting -- in the once middle-class decaying streets.

I read somewhere that the agencies are now saying that temp contracts are way up, and that their client's are still not looking to make the temps permanent.

I am bumping this because I didn't want to create a new thread on this subject. I've been seeing temp jobs listed for years!. In fact one of the museums was hiring a position but get this it stated "temp until 2014". That's three years of being a temp (and need I mention no benefits?). Then another one needs a temp worker from September to June of next year.

I hear what you are all saying, but the three I am registered with have not had anything at all, and I will say, were at least honest enough to admit it to me. Although I am still registered, I have yet to get a call. They are using temp agencies here in south NJ to staff labor pools and landscapers and that's been the bulk of their hiring. Some warehouse staffing as well, but not much else.

However, my sister started her current position 12 years ago, and for 3 years she was with Kelly, she was hired and is now a finance manager with a major pharmacutical firm and doing very well, but 3 years as a temp. That was not during a recession either, so some companies do use it as a way to hire. Generally temp to perm goes anywhere from 6 months to a year under normal circumstances, but these are not normal circumstances. However, I would take one in a hot second if the pay was sustainable and try to get my own healthcare until a permanent position came along. I am not sure, given the climate right now, that if we all were able to get sustainable wages and permanent positions that healthcare would be included without large employee contributions, it's the big hot button issue now and they will run with it until they really make some headway into reforming the health insurance industry. That will happen right after they reform taxes and when we all see pigs flying past our windows.

I'm signed with several agencies and only one was honest with me, a local Kelly agency. The woman I spoke to turns out she was unemployed a few years her self. Told me she had to remove her upper management position from her resume and add in lower level jobs she held. She went from upper management to receptionist. She was honest and said that most of the jobs they had available were manufacturing jobs and they wouldn't even consider me because I have no background in them. She also said that while it wasn't fair, but employers didn't want anyone with employment gaps. Oh and she gave me a few companies that don't even hire through Kelly.

Remember when somebody posted something about 29 things an HR person won't tell you? One of these thing was that her boss told her that he wanted her to hire a certain long-legged brunette, even though 2 others scored higher on some kind of test(perhaps Work Keys?), & even though she wasn't worth crap on the job. Almost every temp or staffing agency that I've tried to deal with lately seems to have that attitude, & some of them amount to a pimp running a string of girls, by that I mean, the hot chicks get anything they want, no matter the cost. If you can find an agency like the Manpower office that I used to work for back in the 1980s & into the 1990s, that would be great. Back then, if you were willing to work & were flexible, you got work, a wide variety of work, & almost as much of it as you wanted. Unfortunately, that appears to be a thing of the past.

If employers judged by looks I would have found a job by now. As it turns out most of my interviews have been with female HR people. Perhaps if I got a guy into long legged brunettes I'd stand a chance.

If you have Contract and Temporary Assignments, group them together under Contract Assignments and take out the gaps. If you worked one day in 2011, put something like 2008-2011.

Many of us are stuck doing these assignments for now. It sucks big time, this is not the way to live. Don't be loyal to any client or agency. Use them like they use you. You can collect Unemployment Benefits after doing temporary work, provided you don't quit your last assignment.

Some agencies are a big pain in the AS-S, they are picky about job gaps and want references where the clients can't give references. Friday, I told one agency that the manager could be fired for not following policy. He claimed that he had many references from my former employer by contractors that worked for him. I told him all those mangers should have been terminated. He was so worried I was terminated. This put him in a spot and then he accepted my older references that did not break policy.

Maybe there's more to it than just looks, ie, what you would be willing to do to please not only the manager if it's a man, but also a client that has the capability to provide that staffing agency with a lucrative contract. Chances are nowdays, if you're not willing to do something like that, you really don't stand a chance. They simply wait for somebody else that is willing, and the odds of that happening have increased along with the unemployment rate.

Well I'm average looking and short as hell, so what do I do people?? I'm not jealous of anyone, we play the cards we're dealt, but all of us-ugly, fat, tall, short whatever must have a way to make a living or there will be riots in the streets.

Do you mean like sexually? I've actually seen ads stating must be willing to perform sexual activities for the job. We are getting to that level.

Just kidding but it's getting to that point where only certain people will get jobs. As it is in many fields only attractive need apply, including public relations and even many restaurants are requesting photos.

Yeah I have seen what amount to ads for hire as a prostitute and all want phots. I am just a typical middle aged women-I was a hottie once, but no one can remain that forever unless you have a plastic surgeon on staff. Even the young people today will be old tomorrow. We can't do this to people as a society because it will affect EVERYONE eventually. People can't be tossed away after 35 because that leaves way too many years to do what-live in the street? We shouldn't even have to have this discussion. If a person is neat and groomed, clean, professional, this should be a nonissue. Just goes to show how truly shallow employers are today. Like dealing with a bunch of boys in a junior high. Why don't employers want the most experienced, intelligent. I know I would if my money was on the line. I'd get my jollies elsewhere is that was what I needed, I sure wouldn't hire an bad person because they were good-looking. They won't look that good when they cost you a bunch of money or customers etc. I know a situation where a hot girl was hired to do some accounting over someone qualified. She had no idea how to account. She almost bankrupted the company due to her poor skills. She screwed their books so badly they nearly went under. I laughed because I watch the whole thing unfold and man did the jerk deserve it. Guess who had to clean it up?? The not so hot middle aged woman. I wouldn't consider you middle aged but then again I never call myself middle aged. To me I'm still young and so are you! But yep I've seen so many ads that request photos and that scares me. It's one thing if it's for dating, but jobs? It's notoriously bad in many fields.

I didn't think I was middle-aged either until lately with these interviews. It is ridiculous. We're the same age as J Lo and too old to hire??? I was born in 72. These shallow men are sickening. I lost a job to a 8th grade drop out know for her shall I say "oral" and I don't mean communication skills at a trucking company in the office. 8th grade dropout!!!! Eye candy more important than skills. Now, if you are a stripper, escourt etc. Well it makes sense. Have at it. Not office, waitress work etc. You are a communicatons person right? Can you imagine how I felt when I found that out-relieved to not work for such a bunch of jerks, but still in need of a job and disgusted.

Yes I am a communications major and let me tell you I get so disgusted seeing some of the morons they hire. People with poor grammar, people who can barely do math, etc. Yet they often get hired for reasons like you mentioned and it is sick. I understood as a model I was being judged by my looks, but for office jobs? Ridiculous.
