Re: Age discrimination outlined in classified
Young and trendy isn't exactly age discrimination. Young can be used to desribe anyone under the age of 30 or maybe 35.

Right, but what about those who are young at heart and in their mid to late 40s to 60s, who are trendy.

Re: Age discrimination outlined in classified
Well, all I'm saying is that unless they state "must be 18-25" then there's nothing that can be done about the ad. I agree that it's discriminatory in the fact that it's unethical to state that description in an ad but it's not illegal since they didn't specify any specific "age" groups in the ad.
The ad simply states "young" and unless they specify an age group ... the ad is simply vague and too broad without being specific.

This is not really discrimination. I do think it is poorly worded though.
I do feel like they would hire someone who was older IF they were trendy enough. I would not want a job where I had to worry about what is in style this week and not wear something that was in last week. That would just be annoying.
However, it isn't really discrimination because they didn't mention ages at all.
I am male and I am unlikely to be hired as a server at hooters. Is that discrimination?

Kinda sorta yes. Its gender discrimination as if you are qualified to serve.

No, that is not discrimination. Not even kinda sorta, this is the kind of person they are looking for. I am sure they will take your application, they just won't hire you.
But Rgreen is right, discrimination IS happening and it's mostly toward people who are unemployed. I see more and more unemployed need not apply ads.

Technically, they really didn't do anything wrong. There are just certain jobs that companies hire specifically for. The one thing I could never understand is why companies hire employees from Temp Agencies because they end up paying twice the amount of pay for that employee.
Say a temp agency hires you for a job assignment for $8, that agency actually charges the company $16 an hour for your services.

That makes no sense except that it might be easier to let someone else hire you than to spend time interviewing themselves. It's just another middle man that should be abolished.

Re: Age discrimination outlined in classified
just saw jobs report on cbs and nbc. they asked about discrimination towards unemployed. supposed to be some investigation as to how wide spread it is. yeah there are companies that come right out and say it but what about those that dont say it but put it into practice? i think it is more widespread than anyone wants to admit and when you add age discrimination this thing is compleley depressing. nbc sez unemployment number are more like more than 15 percent when you add part-timers who want f/t work, those too discouraged to look and the numbers for people out of work more than a year is still high and not dropping.

Re: Age discrimination outlined in classified
like those annoying online applications i ignore any job posting with the words "young."
ive experienced this but a woman on cbs said she applied for a job online at 11pm and got a rejection response in 2 1/2 minutes!
