Florida is rapidly becoming Un-American
First topic message reminder :
That's right ...the Republican led Florida legislature is proposing even more restrictions to those who (in the future) will lose there jobs in the current, very dismal Florida job market. How? By reducing state funded benefits (first time filings) from 26 to 20 weeks, require skills testing to qualify, and forcing someone to take a job that pays LESS than the benefits would. These restrictions are being considered in a state where the unemployment rate is 12% and benefit amounts are already some of the lowest in the country. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO THOSE ALREADY ON UI.
NO other state in the union has a state funded 20 weeks (they are all 26). NO other state requires skills testing. FEW states pay as low as Florida does already. This is all coming from that criminal Governor Rick Scott and with a Republican majority in the legislature this proposal could really happen.

He is cutting funding for everything in Florida. Except for the dredging of ports in Miami. Never mind the destruction of coral reefs and the eco system down in Dade County. He is a monster.
Re: Florida is rapidly becoming Un-American
Pleasetell me where he should cut?
State is Brooooooooooooooooooooooooooooke!
They have to build on average 1 new public school a week, feed the poor, educate the poor and pay their medical. Of course these are not Americans.
So what does he do?

An out of control monster at that ET. He will continue to do his bidding as long as he goes unchecked as he is now. The FL legistlature is controlled by a Republican super-majority so that makes any possible push to impeach him virtually impossible.
Do citizens have any recourse at all in this crisis?

Every state is in a money crisis at some level or another. Scott is punishing the working class and unemployed by cutting programs that are needed. In some cases he is pushing the limits of his powers past the legal edge.
So, to answer your question...What does he do? RESIGN. NOW!!!

Unemployment benefits in a state with almost 13% unemployment rate should not be one.
If you disagree then I question why you are here.

This bill doesn't look wrong or detrimental to me. A reduction of benefits from 26 to 20 weeks is minor and still backed or followed by federal EUC Tiers 1-4. Skills testing and being required to take a minimum wage job if it is available is likewise not a big deal because it is better to work and have a job than be subject to the roller coaster ride of benefits. Our state government has to take measures to stabilize our economy for everyone. That's what government does.

@Injeun; And who are you? I will not even respond to your comments except to say "We are under attack by Gov. Scott and his cohorts! He is not letting people who have done their time in prison, to vote! This is a major civil rights back lash of huge proportions!"

Government that is legitimate and cares about the concerns of it's citizens whether they agree with them or not is not what Rick Scott is about. He cares nothing about those who oppose him and only about the ones who follow his every beckoning. As I posted earlier in this thread he said he is always available to talk but only to people who agree with him. In other words he is not interested in talking to those that don't agree with him.
What kind of a governor is he? Sounds like he doesn't like to being called out for the criminal he is. Yes, criminal. Anyone who pleads the Fifth 75 times is definitely hiding something. Eventually this is all going to blow up in his face. Obviously you voted for him. You are probably one of the radical right Tea party members or one of his rich cronies benefitting on his planned raping of Florida.

Re: Florida is rapidly becoming Un-American
@chopthis91 you tell em! My representative (Gus Bilirakis) is just like the above. I have written him over and over again...and get the usual naysayer response. HR589 has to get out of committee, blah, blah, blah. He also passes the buck, when it comes to local issues...like our parks in Pasco County, now charging 2 bucks to look at the water. What a disgrace!!! Well, at least they don't charge to look at the sky, yet.
These repubs won't budge. Their might be a handful who hear our plight, but not in this state.Florida: the state of doing nothing to improve anything, just dredge some more water, for some more cruise ships to dock in Miami. Good grief.

Re: Florida is rapidly becoming Un-American
ET...I'm up to here with all of this political bickering, posturing, and theater. Seems that even the ones who claim they care are only concerned about their re-election and nothing else. Instead of doing what is best for the people they are either apathetic or evasive. This is true from the top (Obama) to the bottom (local) in our government. The laws of The Constitution have been (in many cases) not followed and as a result the country is failing.
When a known criminal is allowed to run for public office like Scott was then you know that a lot of money has been passed to those who make the decisions on candidates. In this case the Republican Party of Florida. When he "wins" like Scott did you also have to assume that he won illegally (fixed election, bought votes, etc). When government is run by one party (in this case Republican) opposition is shut out. We have no recall laws in place outside of local governments and the liklihood of impeachment is also off the table with the Republican super-majority. In other words...Forida is screwed.

@chopthis91 but we have to keep making our voices heard. No matter what. Awake the State is a very good group to be part of. They are on Facebook. I would highly recommend joining them. Stephanie Porta is the head organizer, really positive woman and someone who listens and is a "do-er".

I've stayed away from Facebook and Twitter only because companies look for job applicants who have applied at their companies to see what they say on line. Politics is a "hot button" issue so...what if you make a comment and they see it and don't agree and you aren't hired as a result? I know...maybe that's a stretch and maybe I'm being paranoid but it does cross my mind.

Florida isn't the only place where they have health care conflict of interest.
SHOWDOWN: Megyn Kelly And Anthony Weiner Yell At Each Other For 6 Minutes On Air
"Weiner has been strongly arguing that Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas should recuse himself from judgment in the Obama health care reform — Democrats feel that Thomas' wife's involvement with health care lobbying is a conflict of interest — Kelly and Weiner spent about half of a 6-minute interview talking over each other and rolling their eyes."

"Tricky Ricky" is pushing a lot of buttons isn't he? Just another example of how greed can consume someone. Eventually this is all going to catch up to him. The two biggest question I have are....When will this happen? and Can the damage he causes be reversed?

Re: Florida is rapidly becoming Un-American
Well the 20 weeks has not passed the Senate yet. Awake the State is a good option. We have to make our voices heard. This is happening due to the Koch brothers financing the campaigns and elections of all the Repub. governors this year. Their financial shenanigans have to be exposed. Plus, Scott is a millionaire. There are democrats that are millionaires too in this state. That guy Green...didn't he run in the primary against Sink? Maybe we have to get them to take a stand. They have the money.
I dunno, I am a poor old gal..sadly watching Florida fall by the wayside.
At least our Everglades have been saved. Some ranchers down there have saved the land from developers. So that is good news. I don't know what else to say.

Re: Florida is rapidly becoming Un-American
Sounds like this attack against Governor Scott is more partisan than thoughtfull. Maybe from disgruntled Alex Sink supporters? I mean when everything that a new Governor does is immediately felled upon, criticized and condemned...and the Governor himself is called a criminal. It doesn't sound like a reasoned response. It sounds like sour grapes from a lost election. Granted, unemployment issues affect us regardless of our party affiliation. But I don't see how a reduction in length of benefits makes the Governor out to get us. Now if one said that he or she thinks that the Governor should raise the unemployment tax for businessmen instead of shorteneing unemployment benefits, that would be a logical debate. And it is a matter of judgment. But to call the Governor a criminal, and impugn his character so as to somehow discredit his judgment is a sleight of hand more indicative of criminality than name calling.

At least Rep. Weiner has a spine! Did you see the video of the day today? It is great! He should be giving President Obama some lessons on how to speak to the Republicans, who walk all over him.
