No, I Don't Speak Spamish!
In CA every other job posting requires an applicant to be bilinigual in Spanish. I can speak enough Spanish to get by on vacation, but I'm certainly not fluent and could not converse with someone. It makes me steam when I meet all of the employer's requirements, but I can't speak Spanish. This shouldn't be a requirement for a job seeker unless the applicant is seeking a job in Mexico!

Same in Maryland. Employers seem to be very amazed that everyone doesn't speak Spanish. I think if I spoke Spanish, but no English, I would have a better chance.

Re: No, I Don't Speak Spamish!
Wow I thought I was the only one who found this frustrating. As a matter of fact I got into an online debate about this where the person said it's much harder for someone who doesn't speak english to find a job. I say baloney! Every job now is requesting bilingual. Sorry I'm flawed I thought that speaking proper english was all i needed to work in this country.

Every job does NOT require bilingual skills. Where is everyone getting this notion?

Okay, I can search on bilingual jobs and come up with a thousand. So I'm still asking the question.

I can only base my response on my personal experience. Maybe there are fields where this is not as prevalent but in nonprofit work there are MANY postings that I have not applied for because I only speak english!

I give up on this. Having more than one language is definitely a plus for some fields, but there are so many more jobs that don't require this.
Take a spanish course.

Come to California, smindles. You have to be bilingual for manual labor jobs. Construction jobs want ONE certified electrician, plumber, mason, etc. but they have to be bilingual to converse with all the illegals they hire for $5 per hour. Radio Shack, AT&T, county jobs, city jobs, service jobs, checkers, clerks, librarians, maids, etc. - ALL need to be bilingual. I am fluent in 4 languages, but mine don't count...
The County used me for their "quota" for years because I had a Spanish surname and could understand Spanish reasonably well, but Americans of Spanish or Mexican descent - 3 and 4 generations or more - aren't bilingual and can't get jobs here.
As for taking a Spanish class - friends who were in a special library Masters Program I worked with for years were all bilingual, but the guys from Detroit, Arizona, New Mexico, California, etc. couldn't understand each other. Spanish has many variations - more than accents from regions of the US.
I know a lot of people fluent in more than one language, but if it isn't Spanish in California, then you can kiss off the job!

Re: No, I Don't Speak Spamish!
Where do I find the money to take a Spanish course? Funds for training the unemployed have dried up. When I was in high school, the only foreign languages offered were French and Latin. A lot of good that did for me! My mind is filled with anxiety, wondering how I'm going to get through each day. Depression has completely taken over. Don't you dare call me a whiner because I say these things either! Most occupations that require you deal with the public want bilingual employees! I hate these ads that are so discriminating, and it seems I come across them all the time. I am not discriminating against those who cone to this country to find a better life. I support the DREAM Act 100%!! Here's an idea, let's hire enough ESL teachers to teach English to those that live in this country and don't know it! Think of all the jobs that would create! Every ESL class I have ever seen offered is FREE! If I wanted to learn Spanish, I would have to take (and pay) for a "pre-course" , no college credits, then on to Spanish 1. Then of course there's Spanish 2...3....4.......... Sorry, Smindles, I don't have the time for that at this point in my life! I f'ng give up!smindles wrote:I give up on this. Re: No, I Don't Speak Spamish!
Desperate - you said it all very well!! Free English classes everywhere, but Spanish classes cost because of "accreditation" issues. When I was in school in Ohio, we were told that we would not be offered second-language classes because English would be the only language used in the US.
Please let us know how you fare after talking with John.

I did several times. There is no money for retraining left unless you have absolutely no marketable skills!invisiblecitizen wrote:Desperate - you said it all very well!! Re: No, I Don't Speak Spamish!
I always have to have the last word, so here is another example I just came across:
Administrative Assistant
The Bell funeral Home, Inc. is interested in hiring a bi-lingual
Administrative Assistant (Spanish) to join our dedicated team. We
currently are looking for an individual who has a defined attention to
detail, passion for customer service, precision when it comes to
accuracy and efficiency. Most important dependability, remembering
teamwork is part of our culture.
This is a full-time position hours of 8am to 5pm Monday thru Friday. The
salary is based on experience starting at $30,000 to $40,000 dollars.
Additional details will be provided to candidates during the interview
session.

Re: No, I Don't Speak Spamish!
Here in Colorado there is alot of bi-lingual. And on most of the jobs that require Spanish speaking I do meet all of the requirements. I said to one phone interviewer that I am American and have never or will never speak Spanish. If Spanish speakers want to live here in the US.
THEN THE REQUIREMENT FOR ANY EMPLOYMENT SHOULD BE ENGLISH SPEAKING ONLY!!!!!!!!

Re: No, I Don't Speak Spamish!
As far as funding to go back to school to learn Spanish, I came across this White House report just released regarding what will happen, state by state, due to the sequestration cuts. Here is one, in particular, for RI:
Job Search Assistance to Help those in Rhode Island find Employment and Training: Rhode
Island will lose about $126,000 in funding for job search assistance, referral, and placement,
meaning around 4,550 fewer people will get the help and skills they need to find employment.
