Re: Big Retail Companies Require Job Applicants To Disclose Their Age
No one should have to disclose their Social Security number before there is a job offer.
"They're asking for your Social Security number and date of birth on applications now, which I don't think they have a right to do unless they're hiring you, and you don't have the option of not filling them in," she told HuffPost. "You either fill them in right, or you lie, and I'm all for lying."

You are asked for your SSN, DOB and drivers' license number in order for them to conduct a credit and background check. Been there, done that in October at Kohl's.

The one thing I won't do is give my ID#. While asking for your date of birth or social security number is no big thing, I draw the line at asking for my State ID#.

I just posted this on Huffington Post's website:
Filled out an application with ANNA'S LINENS the other day and they also asked for my birthday and ss# saying it was for the "background check". I shouldn't have but the website was indicating SECURE so I went ahead and filled it out. Maybe I'm stupid but being out of work for 20 months will cause you to do things you normally wouldn't do and btw no calls from them for an interview. The government needs to jump on this situation NOW!!!
I know what they did is illegal. Do I have any recourse? Could I sue?

ALL the major retailers ask this. Their excuse is they need the info for background and credit checks. Legislation was brought up in the Senate last year regarding this, but of course, it was shot down by the GOP.

Whole Foods didn't ask any of that junk. Maybe that's one reason they have been in the Fortune Top 100 Employers list the last 13 years. I think it's discrimination carefully wrapped in the "background check" disguise. This age discrimination thing is real and seems to be getting worse. That coupled with the length of time out of work is killing chances for the long term unemployed to land a job. All those Federal laws designed to protect us do no good if companies are allowed to skate around them under the radar. I'm furious over this whole issue!!!

I am furious that the Republicans are saying Job Creation is the answer, but throw roadblocks up for the long term unemployed by blocking a bill that would have prohibited employers to ask these questions for "credit checks" and by not extending the hiring incentives for employers. Of course, they managed to approve the tax cuts for the rich, but nothing at all for us.

Maybe there should be an age limit for those in Congress. Say 45? Bet that wouldn't go over too well would it?

I think there should be a limit on who could run for President of the United States and that such a requirement should be that he or she have political experience from serving a number of years as an elected politician.
He or she should also be required to produce an original birth certificate and personal identification card.

Re: Big Retail Companies Require Job Applicants To Disclose Their Age
Senator John McCain lost the Presidential election, because he is old. If dog catcher is a elected position does that count for political experience, Just kidding kemcha.
There were other factors, but many felt that way.
There is so much age discrimination. I should only have to tell Social Security and nobody else! Without getting hostile, what can we do. If I am already on early Social Security, why not lie! I will still have SS benefits. Could loose UI for lying, only if they say so. Then I could turn around and sue them, but first has to be delayed by EEOC. Would they be that stupid to say I lied about my age?
I think I vote for lying about age, this is survival. Give them only the last 4 digits of SS number, the others 0's. It says on the card NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION purposes. Needs to be done after an offer and background check, not for credit. Every time your credit gets check it is dinged more. SS# is used for tax purposes and SS. The illegals get hired, do I have to put in for a name change?

Senator McCain didn't lose because he's too old ... Obama simply had his popularity as the author of those books he wrote as well as becoming a celebrity of politics. I don't see that happening in 2012.

Obama also had the backing of Ted Kennedy. That was the turning point for Hilary.

Sarah Palin sure didn't help McCain much either...

Sure didn't. I was reading that she is losing her popularity in the Republican party very fast. I think it was in the Huffington Post today.chopthis91 wrote:kemcha wrote:Senator McCain didn't lose because he's too old ... The more I had time to think about it. Lying about age, is a good option. I won't go below 40, because then I can't cry age discrimination. I need to buy a wig. It is best if is beat up a little. I know that I could fit into this one. At least I couild have fun with it!

They already ask for your date of birth so there's no reason to ask how old you are.

Senior moment, just subtract 22 from birth year. Could also claim senior moment, I already have the papers on being mental. I need to pass the physical.

just wondering
just wondering how Ruth got away with lying? If they did a background check it would be obvious no one by that name was born on the date she used. Does this mean companies are not doing the background checks on candidates who make it through?
Also, I have applied and been interviewed 2x by a big retailer and my first instinct was to fill in the birthdate section with zeros. Guess what? They are on to you and the form does not allow this.
