HR 589 - Barbara's Back (Oct 6 Update - 99er Issue To Be Discussed)
First topic message reminder :
Crew of 42 has posted a new item, 'Barbara Lee on 99ers + HR 589'
H.R. 589. Rep. Barbara Lee speaks on her bill for 99ers, H.R. 589, at a Progressive Caucus press conference this morning, Though there is a bunch of language and references to "unemployment insurance" in President Obama's jobs plan it does not specifically mention if the extension is for 99ers. The President's job plan would cost [...]

She can demand all she wants, that won't make it happen. Has to go through the proper channels and we know who is holding it up. If they are so sure it won't pass, it seems to me it would be simple to let it go to the floor. Something seems strange to me about that.

Since the fervor of a month ago, anyone hear about anything more about Barbara and her HR 589 "special to go"?
Politics, sickening.
Politics, sickening.

Wow! One more co-sponsor - Rep Tonko, Paul [NY-21] - 9/7/2011
We are in the same place we were in last year with 3706, only this time, we have waited since February.
The President's proposal for a higher tax rate on millionaires will be the compromise that gets the existing program, EUC08, extended for another year (maybe less). We won't see additional weeks, this is just a game to them.

If they let tiers expire and Obama only wants those eligible to move to the next tiers that are already in place . so unless they re extend the tiers then there is NO tier 1 to attach anything to! Its dead. 589... dead in the water!

Why is this always Obama's fault? He doesn't, nor can he, make the laws. That is up to Congress, and we all know how that goes..........exhaustedandtired/1208 wrote:If they let tiers expire and Obama only wants those eligible to move to the next tiers that are already in place . so unless they re extend the tiers then there is NO tier 1 to attach anything to! Re: HR 589 - Barbara's Back (Oct 6 Update - 99er Issue To Be Discussed)
We unemployed need to get crafty. We need to write a "Dear Barb" letter asking her to stop this charade.
Then we need to take the Jobs Bill and amend it so it makes sense, taking into account 99ers and all the other stuff I'm too tired tonight to gurgitate over. "JOBS" is the word of the month and it's directly connected to the word of the year "US".
So if we show that we aren't the type to pop the morning Bud and sit watching Ellen... that we have been and will continue to be prudent in seeking employment, bill or no bill, how can B.O. or R.E.P.U.G.S put us down?
Dear Barb, we're sorry to inform you but this 589 3 month extension that's been bait all along just doesn't spin after waiting 3 x 3 months and it's a joke. We don't want you to be embarrassed by bringing it up again. Nobody is fooled anymore.
Move aside, the JOBS train is comin' through, we're all aboard and man are we pissed off!
Something like that.

The letter should go to the other 88 co-sponsors too, just to let them know that we are serious, even if their sponsorship was only a political game.
Time for asking nice and begging is over. Promises and proposals made by politicians to appease us has worked for them for well over a year. We have been too silent and complacent and have gotten nowhere. I think we need to change our strategy! I'm sick of excuses - I want my life back!

Re: HR 589 - Barbara's Back (Oct 6 Update - 99er Issue To Be Discussed)
Anyone read the provisions of S 1549, sponsored by Majority Leader Harry Reid - The American Jobs Act? It is a joke! Nothing to help the exhaustees right now, or the millions who will soon be in the same position.
Why are we taking this so quietly? Instead of all the negativity, we should be contacting everyone on Capitol Hill, burning up their phone lines and crashing their servers to remind them that WE EXIST AND WE WILL NOT BE IGNORED AGAIN!
Time is running out. If no one acts now, we are screwed again. This time probably in worse shape than before.
S 1549 and HR 589 combined is a short term fix - we need more than that and it is time to let them know it. I don't know about you, BUT I WANT MY LIFE BACK!!

If you need a new printer, the new ones also use less ink per page. Buy one with a FAX, they have really come down in price. With this weapon, many of us can now jam politicians FAX machines. Their is no need to go to their office and take a chance in being arrested! Who can afford the gas?

I posted on the site. http://www.crewof42.com/cbc/barbara-lee-on-99ers-hr-589/ It's awaiting moderation...
Between age discrimination and discrimination against the long-term unemployed it’s almost impossible to get a job. I finally did get a job but I am underemployed and making low wages. I am still digging out of a financial hole after becoming a 99er. The energy assistance that I qualified for while a 99er was the only thing that kept the lights on & now those programs are being cut & winter is around the corner. Something has to give! Get this bill through and stop using us as a political football. At least punt!

It's hard. The physical demands are much more than I bargained for. I am literally on my feet all day (on concrete) and running all over climbing a ladder, reaching, bending, stooping---at a fast pace. At almost 57, it's tough. I am exhausted and sore. My feet are causing me problems and I can't afford new shoes even though they are the right size and I bought wide ones after a conversation with a K-Mart worker. Two 15 minutes break and a half hour lunch to sit. For the first time my ankles are swollen at the end of the week. The good news is that I have lost almost 10 pounds.

Sorry to hear that, Mo. You deserve a lot better than this. Hang in there, hopefully you will be able to apply for internal postings soon. I know it is no comfort, but at least you have your foot in the door.MoInSTL wrote:It's hard. The physical demands are much more than I bargained for. Sorry to hear that Mo, it will get easier as you go and lose weight although. I am like a roller coaster. During the summer I always lose about 30lbs and find it in the winter.

Just saw this post!
Rep. Barbara Lee is gonna be on The Rachel Maddow show tonight, sometime in the 9pm EST hour. Hopefully she mentions and fights for the 99ers again like she did earlier today on MSNBC. Tune in if you can. For those on Twitter, keep tweeting her @RepBarbaraLee and keep pushing for HR 589.

Agree, nutty, you should have stuck with the game. She didn't mention HR 589, but Rachel did rant about the way Obama's comments were twisted out of proportion. If you watched the speech he made to the CBC, it was inspiring and we should all be taking his advice! It is the only way we can make a difference!X wrote:stillnutty wrote:Just kiddin you KNOW I M WATCHING, SHUT ER DOWN!!

Re: HR 589 - Barbara's Back (Oct 6 Update - 99er Issue To Be Discussed)
We need to keep contacting her, the entire CBC and keep the pressure up. We are not counted anywhere, she needs to know our numbers to continue pressuring for this bill. It may not be perfect, but it's a start. New jobs will not appear magically in the next 30 days or 300 days to employ every 99er much less all the unemployed and underemployed. We cannot afford to say that it's not enough, it will never pass, we have to remain united in our efforts that this is wrong and we need help and we need JOBS. Please all members

Dear Barbara,
Just writing to tell you we haven't heard from you lately, again.
Well I take that back. When I blogged to one of Lauren Victoria Burke's endless flow of "Crew of 42" emails, I blogged about you and my discontentment.
Well geez. A week after and I find myself on your mailing list. Don't know what to say but "hey, wassup!"
Wish you'd come clean on HR 5 whatever it is. The dream is over. Pack it up.
Here's the note I received. Thanks so much. It meant a great deal to me. Especially at point 2, where you address HR 5 whatever it is. "It helps people and stimulates the economy".
WOW! That's like a shot heard round the world. Words so simple and yet so squishy.
Maybe bring it down to "It stimulates" or "It helps". No sense in going overboard and bringing it out of wherever the hell it is.
Thanks Barb. We'll remember this.

Dear Friend,
As autumn begins, our nation is in crisis and it is time to rally the troops.
I am bringing your message to Washington: OUR NATION’S JOB CRISIS IS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY. There is a level of despair and struggle that I have never seen before. Leaders in Washington have spent too much time and energy focused on deficit reduction and playing political games, and now is the time to create jobs, target economic inequality, and fight against poverty.
Here are some things we can do:
1. Pass the American Jobs Act
It is critical that America returns to the land of opportunity for all and the President’s plan is a good start. Pass H.R. 12.
2. Support the long-term unemployed
Pass H.R. 589 and extend emergency unemployment compensation to those who have exhausted their benefits. It helps people and stimulates the economy.
3. End the wars
Pass H.R. 2859 and repeal the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force which was passed immediately following the attacks of 9/11, an overly broad blank check to wage war.
4. Repeal the Bush Tax Cuts
I believe the Bush Tax Cuts for the wealthy should be repealed and that funding should be applied immediately to job creation.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial recently opened to the public – and it reminded me that when Dr. King brought a message to Washington, he didn’t do it alone. We need to make Washington work again for real people and real families. But I need your help. I need your voice. I need you to put that street heat on. I need you to understand that this is a political fight, a political struggle. We need to exercise our rights, register to vote, and get active.
The Memorial will be officially dedicated on October 16. It is my hope that we are reminded to reach out to the less fortunate and support those that are struggling. We must prove that our country is capable of providing pathways from poverty to prosperity – FOR ALL.
Sincerely,
Barbara Lee
