Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
I read a lot on the first UF forum. I also read posts on the displaced workers forum, which I understand is now shut down.
I just have a question. Where has everyone gone? It seems to me like there were many more people before posting. Is this just my imagination? I realize in an online forum there is no way to know what happens to people, as they come and go. I've done the same on forums.
However, this is giving me cause for concern. I am hoping this doesn't mean people are ending up on the streets or worse. Or did everyone get jobs? (which is my hope). Thoughts?

Re: Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
Most people that get jobs stick around I think. If you mean between the original UFF and UFF 2.0 I think that most people just disappeared when it went away. A lot of the people that caused the original to close down never came back also. If you mean here recently, I think a lot of people are just taking some time away. I have noticed that it has been a lot slower lately.

Thanks, it's just been crossing my mind lately so I thought I'd ask. I don't know the ins and outs of the first UFF, but I did read the other forum - the displaced forum one and I just wonder what happens to people. Everyone needs support. It's possible they are getting support via other sources. When I first moved to this city, oddly enough in 2003, there were two support groups for the unemployed. Now there might be one and that's it.
I just would feel better if more people were online or if I knew they are out there getting by fighting the good fight. We all know the press is not reporting on the fate of the LT unemployed and the like, so hard to know what is going on....

Re: Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
I'm still here. I read everything. I just don't post much. I still fax, email and call. I still have no job. My husband finally got a crap survival job after two years. He's the only one of our unemployed neighbors to go back to work except for the plumbers. They've been back to work twice for short times and laid off again.
All the forums seem to have their favorites. I was never one. But then I didn't get swept up into whatever was going on... but it made me cautious and paranoid somehow...

I am hoping this does not include you.
I am hoping that people are just off doing other things and finding even PT jobs or taking a break from the Net or what have you.
If this does include you (what you said), I'll be up for another half hour to talk.
Or, please post a thread to let us know what is going on, ok? Oh, and pls PM me anytime. I can't promise I'll get your message the same day, but I'll check in here often.

Re: Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
rprp,
I'm still here too. I was on the other UFF forum and I posted there more often than here. I noticed that there is much less activity here as well. When the first UFF shut down (abruptly it seemed to me) I was confused as to why and didn't discover this one until about a month or so ago. I read the letter posted by a moderator at the time but I still don’t know why the first UFF was shut down.
Sad American,
Your right every forum has their favorites and like you I was not one of them. Not there and certainly not there. Oh well, I have a voice too. I'd like to think that most people; like me got jobs either contractual or permanent. I still come here because you guys are still here and need encouragement. I remember the surge of hope and drive that I would feel whenever I read on first UFF that someone had gotten an interview or landed a job. I honestly believe that if I finally landed a job after almost 2 years, then the rest of you will as well.

Re: Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
Sadly many have given up. There is still a good solid core of contributors here, but it has slowed down some recently.
Re: Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
Also, in the past month or so all we have been hearing about is the debt ceiling crisis. Before that, it was the threatened government shutdown over the 2011 budget. Now that this has been resolved (temporarily), Congress is breaking for their month long summer recess.Jobless_in_Ma wrote:Sadly many have given up. It gets very discouraging, unfortunately for us, giving up is NOT an option.

Re: Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
Giving up cannot be an option. According to all news reports and even the economists, they were overwhelmed with the responses and comments they were getting after the President asked for people to call and tweet and email. The 99ers need to keep up that kind of pressure. Whether we are discouraged or not, going away and saying nothing is not an option for us. We have not prospects and we have no benefits. The longer it goes on, the more revenues decrease and programs increase. We all know it can't go on forever, eventually, nothing will be affordable. They have got to focus on JOBS. A JOBS PROGRAM and benefits for the 99ers.

Re: Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
So glad this thread was created. I too, have not been on for a long time. When the 2 new sites were created, I did not like going back and forth only to find the same information. Then I saw the in-fighting among members. I have been around too long and have enough stress in my life without having to see that crap on forums where people come to support each other. I also thought the other site closed down due to problems. Why can't we just have one site like it was with the old UFF? My take is that it went down because of in-fighting, people forming cliques, and also became a popularity contest. There were also people who went way off topic with their discussions. If they wanted to do this, they could have made better use of the chat box or PM each other. I was curious, does anyone know what happened to Mr. Golf? He was a regular contributor.

Re: Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
Thanks for all the replies. I guess some are reading and just don't post. Sometimes I get so depressed seems like typing words is too much effort.
I don't know if I've given up or not. I keep waiting for things to get better and after yesterday it seems like it's not going in the direction of the people. I guess I fall into the category of discouraged worker.

Please know that you ALL are favorites!!! We are interested in hearing from all of you. We are concerned about people not posting anymore as well.
We have lots of new membership and I think some people are just shy and will eventually start posting when they feel comfortable.
I also feel that with the way things are going in congress that people are depressed and have given up fighting as far as benefits go. When there is more talk of a bill for benefits people will come back.
Speaking for myself, I got a job but Im still here and will continue to be here no matter what. I started with 16 hours a week and just got my new schedule for the month of August today. I got bumped up to 32 hours!!!
Crappy pay, real crappy!! but I see it as a stepping stone for now. Its a start.
I hope you all know that you are all equally important. We dont have favorites, as I said above you are all our favorites and we care about each and every one of you!! Please keep posting and sharing with us when ever you can.

Yeah apparently there is a third forum now. It has kind of become like this scene from Monty Python's Life of Brian.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb_qHP7VaZE
To be perfectly honest with everyone, and without naming names, a lot of the people that I feel contributed to the bad feelings and ultimate shutdown of the original UFF seem to stay at the other forum so they can congratulate each other. Frankly I am glad to come here and actually have a conversation.
If that is putting too fine a point on it then so be but, trust me, it could be much more fine than that.

Re: Just a question/concern - where is everyone?
Thank you SICK AND TIRED for those kind words. I am staying put on this forum as representative for my husband, so he can devote all his time to his job search. I totally agree with you that we had more people on this forum when there was actually a CHANCE that we would be getting extensions. It would be nice if people who have gotten jobs would stay here and try to boost our spirits like you, JIM and many others on here have done. There were many on the old forum that promised they would continue to support us, but never came back. Your efforts are appreciated more than you know.I

Thank you Sick & Tired for the kind words. I'm employed now but I'll keep reading and posting and give encouragement where ever I can. Until there are more jobs created for all who want to work and we have an employee market instead of an employer market none of us is really safe or secure in our current jobs.
