Got the Job
I should be hearing about an offer for a low level federal job very soon. (But after 90 days I am eligible to apply for internal announcements). An HR specialist sent me an email a few minutes ago saying I was selected! It's not an official offer as I have to get the call from the local HR. The email said they are trying to contact everyone to confirm and some are starting next week!
I'm holding back some until I get the official call, but it looks good. I'm frankly in shock!
I decided I was sick of banging my 56 year old head against the private sector wall and figured my best chance was a federal job. I was right.

Re: Got the Job
Well it's not official yet Jimmy. As a favor to me, she checked into it. It's been a couple of months and she & I have talked on the phone & email. She's very nice & has been helpful. She has no hiring capacity here. But saying I was selected and just not called yet is pretty darn close.
I will be on pins & needles until I get my call.
Even so, I am in shock.

Re: Got the Job
Everyone who prays, please pray hard that I get the call offering me the position! I am on pins & needles & the stress from waiting is overwhelming. Some have already been called & start next week.

Re: Got the Job
Mo, hope you know, you are always in my prayers, but an extra one will be said for this. Please stay calm (sure, easy to do right?) and let us know.

Re: Got the Job
Mo, My husband has been applying for countless Federal jobs. Got close to an IRS position, but no cigar! Hope your good luck comes his way! He also feels as you do about the private sector. He would take a low-level Federal job for the benefits alone. We have been without medical benefits and the possibility of bankruptcy hanging over our heads if God forbid we get seriously sick is so overwhelming.

Re: Got the Job
I got the offer! I start Monday!!!!
FYI, I am 56 and have been a 99er since December, 2010. So out of work for just shy of 2.5 years. So it can happen!
It's not in my field, but it's a decent job.
Edit: I changed the subject line!

Thanks. I got the email at 5:07 my time. I called per the instructions in the email and reached the HR person on the second try.
I'm still in shock.

Re: Got the Job
LOL gethem! Happy Dance away buddy.
Thanks MK. Thanks for your prayers too.
Too Old, yes, there is hope. FWIW, I applied May 10th. No interview, just straight hire off application. It helped that I am a 5 point preference veteran (Vietnam-era). It doesn't pay a lot, but it should pay my bills. I will be working swing shift and that means 10% shift differential so that will help. It will make for an easier commute too. Winter driving may be a PITA. Not going to worry about that now. Apparently all the day jobs were spoken for. I actually did want swing since it pays more. The only other option was graveyard. So I am pleased to be starting at 3:30PM for now. It also means cooler temps during the summer.
So especially to all vets, give the federal agencies a shot if you are so inclined. It may just work out. Even if it's a low level job, it's a foot in the door and can apply for internal announcements after 90 days. Can't beat the benefits either.

It's working for the Veterans Administration. I'll be working as a file clerk at a massive records center. A huge, multi-acre warehouse. So I will be doing physical work in a dusty, no-AC warehouse. It's where all veteran claims wind up. There are several thousand requests a day. So I'll be climbing ladders, etc. It's going to take some getting used to! I'm glad I can apply for internal jobs after 3 months. But due to the economy, it's not wide open like it used to be, but I can be patient. I just hope the debt ceiling thing and the budget doesn't cause a RIF (reduction in force).

Mo, my husband would do that work in a heartbeat. Like you said, the benefits are good and you can move from within. We were raised by Depression era parents who always taught us to take pride in what we do for a living, even though some would look down on it. It does help to be a vet to get Government jobs, as it should be. You guys helped keep our Country strong and you deserve it. Hubby will keep checking USAJOBS as he has been, but now he has a little more hope thanks to your good news! Oh and by the way, you both have been 99ers for the exact same time.
