Yes it was interesting but I think its marketing ploy to get people to register to the website. Those people mentioned weren't quite believable though I do agree that sending out resume's blindly and applying for open positions is limiting.

Hunter, you raise a good point. Can we add this question to the town hall. Sending resumes and applying for open positions on job boards is limiting and we have not way to track the companies? Or do you wish to do this yourself.I think it is a great question.

Even the more reputable boards such as Linkup & MinnesotaWorks.net contain dead ends.

Re: Breaking Through Long Term Unemployment -Article
This is a good article. I have incorporated all of these into my job search. Keeping current info on resume (volunteer work, advanced degree, professional certification pending, contract work), learned to network to reach those hiring managers quicker (thus avoid the black hole) and taking a few interview strategies classes (including being videotapes and getting feedback from peers) to improve my interviewing technique. I even learned to re-vamp my resume to highlight my major accomplishments and put less emphasis on job duties to appeal to those companies that are into “behavioral interviews”.
I would not totally ignore job boards because half of my interviews are a result of my applying on individual company job boards. Yes I hate that lengthy registrations process prior to actually getting to apply for the job that some job boards have but it’s a necessary evil. Anyway I had 4 interviews last week and I just accepted a temp to perm position at a local university! The hiring manager said that If I do well I will definitely be made permanent. I also have 2 interviews this coming week (one is straight perm so I'm definitely going to go for it). I'm also waiting to hear the final selection from a 2nd interview that I had last week (after a phone interview with the same hiring manager). I plan to continue to interview for perm positions until I am offered a perm position. All of this while preparing to sit for exams to earn a professional certification in my field. In my case working a contractual assignment thru a staffing firm gave me my first breakthrough from long term unemployment. Considering my EB was set to run out in 3 weeks and I would have been a 99er; I feel blessed to start this temp to perm tomorrow.

Re: Breaking Through Long Term Unemployment -Article
I also thought it was a well written article. I haven't put it all to use yet, but I do volunteer and intend to start doing more, getting more involved with old work friends, join some associations again, maybe some classes again, etc. I don't believe this what anyone's intend on this tread, but; not everyone can afford the gas money to volunteer, or the dues for the associations, what are they suppose to do? Keep applying on line, some folks don't even have internet, and they have to reserve a computer at the libraries, and they are very strict about that time for use. So, it's a good article, but not everyone can do these things to find some kind of work.

However, I forgot to say big congrats to mscpateach to landing something, and good luck with the perm job interviews.
