Transition from unemployment to early retirement
Any one in this postition, or more of interest to me those that made it successful? I don't want to be here, (but I have to I plan for it). I have a $500 a month (estimated) pension and could take SSI at 55. How long do they pay? I am thinking my payments to keep me minaminally afloat will take me until 2018.

If your pension is a single life annuity defined benefit plan, you will receive that amount for the rest of your life.
As far as SSI, I didn't know you could get that at age 55. Do you have any information on that? I'll be 55 in a little over a week.

I believe SSI, Supplemental Security Income is also for those that are disabled who do not qualify for SSDI. This, would probably be someone with out 10 years or 40 qtrs of work. SSI is run by the States, I would imagine that the eligbility rules are posted at the States website somewhere. But, again, it's my understanding this is for disabled people who can meet the federal requirements for disablity. Many folks meet the requirements, like disabled children, etc.
