Hey, Guys (and Gals) - Time is running out! What can we do to get HR 589 moving?
First topic message reminder :
Recently, several members have made excellent suggestions that several times a week, members meet here, using the Chatbox to discuss new ideas and advocacy campaigns to bring HR 589 to reality.
With less than 5 working weeks left in Congress until the month long August break, action is needed NOW! With the anticipated phase out of EUC08, and the recent report that average duration of unemployment now being 9 months, when Congress returns in September, their focus will shift again to the extension of deadlines.
A day and time would be set, all members are welcome to participate. A moderator would be chosen in order to keep the session running smoothly. This group would be run and managed by our members.
Anyone interested, please let us know by posting here. There is no time to waste. If we want to see any relief in the near future, we must act now.
If you have any suggestions or would like to add other ideas, PLEASE let us know. If there is enough interest, these sessions would begin this week.
Please comment and tell us what you think about this idea!

Thanks.
Thats great Abbie!!
Right now, I have 2 suggestions.
1) Give incentives to businesses if they hire the long term unemployed.
2) I know many people (99ers) who would gladly do community service for more benefits. It would be a great opportunity to get out there and could possibly lead to a job. At the same time we would be working for our UE checks. I wouldn't mind that one bit!! I would like to see that option explored at some point. I think this would also make it easier for some of the GOTP to digest giving more benefits.

Awesome! You know its rare for reps or anyone from congress, or their ghost writers to respond right? That is fantastic that they are interacting with you. You are doing a great job!

Well this one is backed by the tea party but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and whoever is tweeting hasn't been nearly as chitty as my rep. He likes the community service for UI extensions idea so I asked him to run it by my rep.

Re: Hey, Guys (and Gals) - Time is running out! What can we do to get HR 589 moving?
Thanks Abbie! I think at this point it couldn't hurt suggesting it to all reps. I just tweeted Boehner about it and I will put it in my next round of tweets. I really think it would be beneficial for all involved, the government and the jobless. It would open doors to new opportunities that weren't there otherwise.
On the down side, Im not certain but they would probably have to change laws to do this so it could take time if they bite. Hopefully it wouldn't be that complicated.

I saw your tweet to Boehner, good luck with that. I don't know if that could be construed as unconstitutional since you lost your job through no fault of your own, but if you volunteered, IDK, how the laws would work but there may be a catch. Boehner's office said before people will just fall through the cracks, I told Ross millions falling through the cracks are unacceptable but he picks and chooses what he wants to answer, I noticed when I tweeted that.
I had to laugh at Ross' tweet that companies don't get tax breaks to outsource jobs, then he said they outsource cause taxes here are to high. C'mon, he must think he is talking to a OH District 8 person who buys all of Boehner's talking points. I asked him if I am supposed to believe another 10% tax cut will cause companies to stop outsourcing after career politicians passed laws so they can. I bet anything he says I am supposed to believe that crap.

Thanks.
I hate to re quote myself but if anyone has any ideas for job creation besides this 4jobs crap, could use some ideas to tweet to the Congressman.
CETA!! It worked for Carter! Should have been implemented 3 years ago.

Re: Hey, Guys (and Gals) - Time is running out! What can we do to get HR 589 moving?
I will ask him about CETA after this post, I found another reply this morning asking me if I suggest we punish companies who already pay 35% in taxes. So I asked him why it is when the people pay and we have paid dearly, it's shared sacrifice but when a company is asked to pay their share it's punishment. I also asked where the 10% tax cut is in any bill for working people, more money spent into the economy would give it a boost which could lead to more hiring. I have asked twice now, so I am wondering if I'll even get an answer.
This Rep is backed by the tea party and is one of the new freshmen so CETA is probably poison to these people but I'll ask anyway. This isn't even as bad as calling a Republican's office. I get hung up on anyway. LOL.
I also asked him if he agreed with Boehner's office who told me people will just fall through the cracks; I said millions of people falling through the cracks is unacceptable and he wouldn't answer that either.
Maybe I should ask him if he agrees with local the tea party email floating around my district where they endorse putting people in work camps? I don't want to piss the guy off but they are very inflexible when it comes to the difference between people paying for this economy and these big companies. I know why but c'mon.
I also wonder how he'd like my idea a rep can earn no more than the average salary his constituents earn but I don't want to stray too far off the unemployment subject.

OK I just asked about the possibility of getting a CETA type program on the table as well as Getthem's environmental studies suggestion. If you all have any more ideas as long as this office is answering me I will tweet your ideas for job creation and improving the economy.
His addy or whatever they call them on Twitter is @RepDennisRoss maybe he would answer someone else's questions, take suggestions too.

Not an argument at all, but I think time has run out and 589 needs to be reintroduced.... Maybe modified or something!

For all we know they could be already making changes to it to make it acceptable to be scored and brought out of committee. what other choice do they have, really. I just hope what ever it is they do, they do it quickly!

I just sent two tweets also, just asking for suggestions on what we are supposed to do. We can't wait another year for the GOP "Job Creators" plan, we have been without benefits for well over a year!

For some reason I can't even get on Twitter, so I'll check later on to see if he tweeted me back. I'll keep trying, it may be my internet connection here.

As far as ideas go. We have how many Senators, Congressmen?? Maybe they could just once, use their contacts with business and get them to the table to create jobs. Mayors in Atlanta are doing it. Get these people to sit down and start creating jobs, with all their contacts, there has to be companies that are willing to start hiring. They always have their hands out to the Senate and the Fed. Govt, now we need a hand. Why are they not doing it. Why are they still playing the blame game and doing nothing, creating no legislation, no works programs, nothing. These companies are receiving record profits, major tax breaks and they have yet to create any real volume of jobs. Why is the gov't not calling for private sector job fairs, matching companies with the unemployed.

I agree with that, the President spoke today at a community college in WA regarding retraining young people for skills to match the jobs in manufacturing that will be opening due to retirements.
Just playing the "devil's advocate' here, but what about now? What about the people who have been without benefits for over a year? We can't wait for job creation unless it happens next week! There is no money left for gas to get to interviews or training programs, car insurance, license and registrations about to expire and no money to renew. People have had their cars repossessed or have been forced to sell them just to survive. How do we get there? Not everyone has the luxury of living in areas that have convenient public transportation and can't afford to move there.
In order to get these training and job creation programs underway, the long-term unemployed need a means of getting to these places. We have lost just about everything.

Re: Hey, Guys (and Gals) - Time is running out! What can we do to get HR 589 moving?
That is pretty much telling it like it truely is, kind of right from the heart of the facts. When will they listen, when will our state legislatures and the congress take matters into their own hands putting the long term unemployed out of work in their agenda of plans and mindset? I think slavery starts to come to my mind in some ways here as sad as it is getting. We have the darn money to support us for in which we will just put in right back into the economy by spending it, and what more from them do they want from us as we're certainly willing to be flexibile with job training programs and rehiring options involving employers.
I wish there was a way to get as many 99ers as possible or exhaustees together and go up to the speaker of the house's working office in SW Ohio, and also the others' however they seem to all have working offices strictly in states capital primarily speaking, Columbus.

Re: Hey, Guys (and Gals) - Time is running out! What can we do to get HR 589 moving?
Oh, I agree Desp. I just see momentum building here and I think if legislation gets past to actually create jobs, not more tax cut b.s., but real legislation, they know it will take time, then the ideas of extending benefits comes with an expiration date. They are creating jobs, they are matching the unemployed workers skill levels with the proper companies, agreements get made and the unemployment extensions have an expiration date, so to speak, when the position is scheduled to start, the benefits stop. They can't ignore this much longer because it's it on everyone's news cycle. The story out of Phila today is not just the schoold budgets, it's the layoffs of teachers (illegally) adding to the already overburdened unemployed list. Jobs was the focus of Andrea Mitchells program, Chris Matthews is in Phila today, it's coming to a head.
We can't let HR589 die, but we need to desperately (no pun intended) push them to start working their contacts to get jobs created. They mayors in Atlanta went company to company and begged, cajoled, asked and probably pushed a little, but they are getting companies in Atlanta to start hiring and according to one report today, not min. wage jobs. At this point, we have to try anything. Tax Cuts are not creating jobs, construction and building are zip down here and thus far, PA NJ have returned any monies that were to be used for infrastructure.
In the meantime #HR589,#JOBS,JOBS,JOBS, We the People need help.

We all have resumes- if we cannot go in person, maybe we can collect our resumes, attach photos of ourselves and our dependents, along with a description of our current living/survival situation, and have them presented to them? I currently am housebound unless it's for an interview. I have to ration EVERYTHING.

Rep. Jessie Jackson Jr. had a resume campaign in March. I sent mine at the time. He brought 15,000 resumes to the House Floor! It was great! I'll try to find the video.
Great suggestion! I think we should email him our resumes again, with the additional information you suggested!
