Hey, Guys (and Gals) - Time is running out! What can we do to get HR 589 moving?
Recently, several members have made excellent suggestions that several times a week, members meet here, using the Chatbox to discuss new ideas and advocacy campaigns to bring HR 589 to reality.
With less than 5 working weeks left in Congress until the month long August break, action is needed NOW! With the anticipated phase out of EUC08, and the recent report that average duration of unemployment now being 9 months, when Congress returns in September, their focus will shift again to the extension of deadlines.
A day and time would be set, all members are welcome to participate. A moderator would be chosen in order to keep the session running smoothly. This group would be run and managed by our members.
Anyone interested, please let us know by posting here. There is no time to waste. If we want to see any relief in the near future, we must act now.
If you have any suggestions or would like to add other ideas, PLEASE let us know. If there is enough interest, these sessions would begin this week.
Please comment and tell us what you think about this idea!

Hmm. Where are those folks who suggested this?
Looks like a lack of interest.

That's the way it always is MO! The forum is for everyone. You know what it is like to work "behind the scenes" as an Admin - there aren't enough hours in a day. We are searching for jobs too, we have very understanding families we have been somewhat neglecting and we get very depressed and withdrawn over our situations also. This is a volunteer committment. We need help!
I really hope those who suggested this step up to the plate. We are running out of time!

@ Desperate in RI:
I believe your comment is absolutely “on target” regarding HR 589’s remaining “shelf life”. If nothing ensues between now and August when the House is scheduled to recess for a month until the fall, I think one can very confidently conclude that this campaign for moving this bill forward will then be permanently dead, perhaps only saved by events occurring that cause the economy to tank into a true “double dip” recession. Since the “window of opportunity” for this bill is seemingly getting smaller by the day, coupled with the recent developments suggesting that this bill really appears to now be on critical “life support”, is in part the bases for my previous post perhaps taking on the character of a “written filibuster” about this issue.
Posted by a member in another thread. This is "critical" now, and I agree with this poster that HR 589 is on "life-support" now. Something needs to happen immediately or we can say good-bye to any further help from Congress. Very shortly, the focus is going to turn to extending the deadlines again. I am not willing to go through that again, only to be left out once more. Are you?

It is so important for everyone to get involved in advocating. The more people Congress hears from the more better off we are. If many different people contact them over this issue it will be like one loud persistent voice. We ALL need to pitch in.
If your not sure what to do as far as contacting congress, PLEASE by all means contact one of the admins/mods for help or search the advocating threads for contact info for reps. We are more than happy to lead you in the right direction.
I suggest if you are limited as to what you can do, I know many people might not have phones for calling or access to fax, tweeting is the next best thing. Open a twitter account if you dont already have one and start tweeting members of congress and the MSM that way.
Twitter is one of the most effective ways to get info out now a days and contrary to what some might say, it really does help.

It isn't that I am not interested, I have called, emailed, faxed, went to town halls, tweeted etc. it just seems none of these work with 589 and except for protests/revolt, I am out of ideas as to how to get the bill to move.

You are doing something, Abbie! I see your tweets all the time. Even if Congress ignores them, others that use Twitter acknowledge them! Spreading the word on how this is affecting us and the hell we are living in is more important than faxing, emailing, etc. the boneheads in Congress. Let the American people get angry! That will get their attention!

I believe HR 589 has always been a dead issue. We the long term unemployed have been over looked and forgotten. I don't care what this Rep Lee has been saying. If you are in the age group of 39 - 60 you do not matter anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always believed that it is a systematic way of elementing those of us in this age greup. There will never be anymore govenment assistance of any kind. Yes food stamps will continue however, for the unemployed I believe we will soon be told TO BAD. If the previous efforts that those from unemployed friends have gone unanswered. What makes anyone think there will ever be any help for the long term unemployed in this country. Washington does not care anymore!!!!!! Obama does not care anymore.

I am glad to see I am not alone in feeling this way.. We were just pawns in Dems and Reps games and we are let to fend for ourselves..
We are to poor to be cared about...

I don't know if we are completely ignored by Congress, I have one Congressional follower, a mayor and some state legislature people. I know S&T has some too and you probably do as well, but what good does that do for them to follow us and there is no action? Personally, I think the follow is to gauge what the public sentiment is apart from polls.
I guess I lost the hope I had in me when myself and some others I know called the speaker's office and was told the tea party was against anything over 99 weeks and they had to follow their will, I am just so sick and tired of that chit I could scream and nothing seems to do any good. I can't say I gave up, I still give them Hell, but I could say after we called, I saw the handwriting on the wall for what it is and I am more in the poster Iam's camp everyday.
Sorry to be negative but those are my thoughts at the moment but I will welcome anything that can change my outlook.

I don't want to be negative, that really isn't my nature, but I'm so disgusted w/ politicians these days, both sides. I just feel like a pawn in their political games and it pisses me off. What has all the calling/emailing/faxing done....it seems like I've wasted my time and energy w/ these b@stard politicians (both parties I now dispise but I hate the R's even more for increasing my suffering), on the Federal and state level. I'm sorry for the negativity today, maybe it is just a bad day and it will pass, and I'll feel my optimistic self again, just very irritated/angry w/ pols these days.

Political games is exactly what this is. I expect around fall Repubs will address the job crisis to get momentum to start out 2012 with. This job crisis is going to get real bad now. All the progress is going to get erased further playing into what the Repubs want. This is where Obama is lacking in leadership skills. Sure Reps control the house but Obama needs to use the media and shame out the republicans. If he can get the people behind him and his passion it will back the Rep party into a corner.

Re: Hey, Guys (and Gals) - Time is running out! What can we do to get HR 589 moving?
You may be right- HR589 may well have been created with NO intention of it ever really being created- sort of a nice way of placating the desperate into using our energy to hope, and not to "act out" as a very large group of disenfranchised citizens. But it exists, if only on paper and erasable ink.
My faxes tweets and emails have fallen on deaf ears, too. Up til Sunday, I was only emailing political figures. I am now expanding my search for assistance and functional ears to ANYONE else that might have influence- writers, journalists, religious figures, organizations, candidate-wanna-be's. I have actually considered writing to China and Mexico in the hopes of embarrassing the GOP. I have been homeless, I don't want to be there again, and yet, it looks like I will.
The first time was as a young girl. I swore it would never happen to me as a grown up. In 2006 I ran out of money job hunting (for ANY type of work) after going through a job retraining program and getting a Medical Coding Professional's Certificate (has proven useless-need 3 years of experience, at the very least ). I moved to an area that had public transportation and supposedly more jobs. I did find work, then I got laid off in 2009 (last hired).
You are right on this: the time spent begging for the right to survive is time taken away from the job hunt. I think from now on, I will send them all a link to my resume as well. In the meantime, does anyone know of a nice tent city?

That's the one thing about this, eventually this job crisis is going to explode. Obama has the bully pulpit and he should use it and stop trying to act like everything is rosy because it is not. The more he tries to say the economy is recovering, the more the R's will use that against him like they did with the last jobs report. He needs to grow a spine IMO or he can find another job too.

If he was doing his job well there would be nothing to use against him! And if he succeeded in his jobs creation then he would not have to defend his failures!

Please, the GOP has obstructed every step of the way on jobs and UI and no matter what he does they will continue to do so and you know it. The lack of jobs created isn't ALL Obama's fault and he sure wasn't the one who called us every damn dirty name in the book to score political points with the tea party instead of trying to work to find solutions to get us out of this hole. While I don't care for Obama's lack of spine when it comes to unemployment, I wouldn't put water on a Repub if one was on fire let alone vote for one.

Re: Hey, Guys (and Gals) - Time is running out! What can we do to get HR 589 moving?
All I know is if we stop now we will never have a chance. NOW is the time to keep up the pressure. EVERYONE, from all walks of life are expressing their disgust with the unemployment situation and the economy. I beg of you to not stop contacting congress just yet. Spreading the word to others is just as important as contacting congress.
Normally when I see negative posts I jump in and try to inject some positivity, but I realize this is a normal part of dealing with a situation such as this. We all need to vent, we are entitled to our own opinions.
Its also a vital part of coming up with a solution or ideas on how to move forward.
With that being said, please by all means vent away but I beg of you not to give up on this just yet.

Speaking of giving up, I have been tweeting off and on all day w/ Rep. Ross R-FL and I have turned the tweets to job creation. If you have time tell me here what you want to see in a job plan and I will tweet it to him or his ghost tweeter or whoever I have on the other end.
Thanks.
Thanks.

It's hard not to be negative about this subject but we need to keep trying..I know emailing tweeting faxing and making phone calls to be basically ignored and not hearing anything new or positive is enough to make some one want to crawl into there hole..If we stop trying though I think is what they want..Plus I don't care if it's Obama the repubs the dems that are to blame(All could shoulder some of it)..Im tired of finger pointing I just wish they all would do something to get things going in the right direction..All these politicians used job creation when they ran for office and yet there is basically nothing on that front...ITS TIME THEY DO SOMETHING

I hate to re quote myself but if anyone has any ideas for job creation besides this 4jobs crap, could use some ideas to tweet to the Congressman.

I am always for more environmental studies. With cuts and denial of Global warming I don't know if they will bite. The only reason I have work right now is the 20 year study being done on the Hudson river and they want to drill for natural gas in my area and studies are going on.

Thanks Getthem,
I will try that and I am also going to mention cutting out the tax loopholes for companies that outsource our jobs. Any other ideas from anyone else feel free to pm ideas or post here and I will see if I can make any headway.
