senate off again
I do believe the senate is off this week. We still have no word on 589. I am
wondering if this is all bs. It looks like Obama will be in for another term. I
don't remember a president travelling so much. If he wants to be president
again so that he can visit all over the world he can't do too much for us.
Every week hundreds of thousands of people are losing their jobs. We can't
get any additional weeks after 99. Yet he spends money on trips that could
pay for additional weeks for us. I think if the republicans would cut $30,000
per year from their paychecks it would help us. I don't hear any of them
offering to do so. I'm just so mad.

HR 589 is nowhere near moving to the Senate - it hasn't even come out of the Ways & Means committee or brought to the House floor. Let the Senate take their break now - we need House action next week - they'll be back tomorrow.
As for the President, I believe his next trip is to Puerto Rico on June 14 - he is their President too, even though the citizens of that territory can't vote in US elections, nor are they protected by the US Constitution. It will be the first time in 30 years the people of Puerto Rico have been visited by their President.

Don't want to get you even more upset, but they only return for 4 days this week - AND ARE OUT AGAIN THE WEEK OF JUNE 6 for their "District Work Sessions". They come back for two weeks on the 13th and are out AGAIN the week of the 27th, come back and WORK ONLY 3 WEEKS IN JULY and have the month of AUGUST OFF!
There are only 6 WORKING WEEKS left until their month vacation - and some of those are not even full work weeks!
We are screwed.

Re: senate off again
The unrest is growing and creeping outside of the unemployed population now. Too many outrageous cuts and proposed cuts are finally getting the attention of the American people. It is starting to affect them.
It will come slowly, but I think ALL of the people in Washington are in for a rude awakening. They are finally being seen for what they are.

Good.... all the vacations they took before deciding to vote on bills affecting the lives of the most vulnerable should have been a pretty good tip-off

Is there any other way to get HR 589 moving along?
With all the foot dragging, vacations and other ways that have been used to ignore the existence of HR 589 (and, by extension, us), is there any way at all to take it out of David Camp's hands and put it someplace where it can be voted on? And is the President hiding from us, too?

Re: senate off again
They need to revisit the vacation sch.. They still go by the founding fathers sch. When it took days if not weeks to get home and the month of Aug was too hot with no AC in those days.. and the fact that the clothes were mostly made of wool and they wore wigs it was too hot to be in the building.. Well today we have planes that can get them back to their dist. in just a few hours. Also they have AC now.. the month of Aug is workable... I wont hold my breath for any changes because they care about us and the real problem.. NOT.. IMO 589 was and always been a ploy to keep the unemployed at bay and let the house pass the bills for the people they care about the RICH

Re: senate off again
That's an interesting history lesson, Judi58. With web conferencing and Skype, there really is no reason for much of the travel. Their speeches could easily be done via the web- next to free. That's money saved. Bringing their vacation schedules into modern times would also save a lot of money.
It does seem like HR 589 is being treated like it exists only in our eyes. If this is the case, should we consider the creation of another bill, or try to get it out of the hands of the Ways and Means Committee, and into an actual vote.

Re: senate off again
We need to keep on the House this week. This bill needs to move to the floor before it gets to the Senate, as Desp. said. Next week, we can contact our respective representatives at their home offices.
Agreed, they take too much time off, but when they do work, they accomplish nothing. Now today, they are sending flaming arrows to the White House, they are not raising to debt ceiling until they get cuts, big shock.
More surprising, (not) no action being taken on "their" new jobs bill.
Now we are in a double dip with housing, not a shock to any of us, watch how fast they move if Wall Street starts having issues again.
I have been saying for months, they need something to light a fire under their butts to get them moving again and unfortunately, it's going to have to be bad press and bad news. We need to contact the press continuously on our plight in addition to the House, Senate and White House.

Re: senate off again
They should have the courage to let 589 out of committee for at least a debate and vote!

No you are not 1208. You sometimes come across that way. People vent, it's what they do. But venting your frustration and aiming at the "pollyannas" and the "cheerleaders" isn't fair. They are the people fighting and working everyday to keep us in the news and in front of our officials. When it's all said and done, you may be right, it may do not good, but many of us cannot afford to financially or emotionally sit back and do nothing. If I and any member won't fight for us or our families and friends, who will do it. No one should fight alone or for people who won't fight for themselves.
Getting frustrated doesn't mean you are cranky, old, or have a bad attitude, it just depends on who you vent about and how you vent it.
Please join us and keep fighting.

I'd rather they wait until things collapse - seriously. If a hearing were held today in the W & M Committee, it would not get enough votes and would die right there. If by some chance Rep. Camp let it go to the floor without a hearing, it would be defeated in the GOP controlled House and that would be it.
The crap has to hit the fan, or some kind of deal or funding for this bill worked out before we will see any help.

Re: senate off again
I agree Desp. It will have to be passed with a "deal". They will never get it through without some kind of agreement that the Repubs want. What a way to do business. Unfortunately, our lives are linked to this "business".
