Statement from NELP on H.R. 1745 movement out of Committee
“The “NO JOBS” Act approved by the Ways and Means Committee is no solution for the ongoing unemployment crisis. There are ways to meet the goals of maintaining benefits for the long-term unemployed, promoting job creation, and easing burdens on states and employers—but this bill does none of that. Instead, it sets the stage to reward states for years of bad UI funding policies and corporations for relentless lobbying to cut UI contributions, all at the expense of the long-term unemployed—and without creating any jobs, “ said Christine Owens, executive director of the National Employment Law Project.
“Last December, Congress made a promise to unemployed workers and the nation that federal unemployment insurance would be maintained throughout 2011 for hardworking men and women, who, through no fault of their own, lost their jobs and are struggling to find new ones in what remains the worst job market since the Great Depression. The NO JOBS Act breaks that promise to these most vulnerable Americans, but honors the deal for our nation’s wealthiest. That’s just wrong,” said Owens.

We have had this thread running since the hearing was announced last week. I'm not sure if the video of the hearing is archived, however you can get the gist of what was going on from the comments made by members.

Re: Statement from NELP on H.R. 1745 movement out of Committee
In November and December 2010, the American 99ers Union were in discussion with NELP, with respect to their supporting and advocating for an extension of UI that would include the longest-term unemployed, the "99ers". Sadly, NELP was not willing to lend its support.
While this statement by Christine Owens is appreciated, the American 99ers Union would suggest a closer look at Miss. Owens words. “Last December, Congress made a promise to unemployed workers and the nation..." This "promise" did not include the millions of 99ers.
When Miss. Owens continued on in saying, "The NO JOBS Act breaks that promise to these most vulnerable Americans..." Truly the "most vulnerable Americans", are those who have been without income (many as long as 14 months and counting) the 99ers.
While NELP's sympathetic words are appreciated, if their mission is to advocate for ALL working Americans who lost their jobs through no fault of their own, it is time that Miss. Owens and NELP truly lobby for ALL Americans. This would of course include the millions that comprise the 99er community. Until such time, NELP is continuing to leave behind a large percentage of America's population.
