Bull! Things are NOT getting better
Just found out a bit ago That the Game company Sony Online Entertainment has made a MASSIVE layoff ALL over. The Seattle, Tucson, Denver studios were closed, The Austin branch was 50% staff reduction and HERE in San Diego a third was cut (207 people). A number people I knew were let go. This sucks as THAT was the place to be if you were an Artist, graphics guy, programmer etc.Now that leaves ZERO opportunities in this town as 5 companies shut down over the LAST 2 years and dumped SO MANY into the streets. That didn't count for LA, Frisco, Orange County that also got rid of people and closed their doors over the last 2 years too. Things just got harder to find decent work around here or in this state within this profession.

Re: Bull! Things are NOT getting better
Don'tcha know, MM. Those games can be made far cheaper with just a handful of game programmers sitting in a small room in India. Making $.50/hour. They don't need to be very bright, after all most of the game making tools are automated these days.
Why pay decent wages, health benefits and such, when they can get it low cost/free via the Net. I'm sure there are plenty of high-powered game programmers sitting in lawn chairs at a Caribbean resort, that will take up whatever slack they have on the cheap.

Re: Bull! Things are NOT getting better
The only industry left where I'm at is coal.I worked at a mine after trade school as an electrician then got the he double hocky sticks out.Now my daughters are grown and even with them begging, pleading and crying I have had enough.I said I would never go back and against my children's better judgement the wife and I are at the end of our rope and I broke down and called the maintenance supervisor I'm scheduled to take a test on Tuesday....I guess never say never to anything. But even if I get a job at the local mines the way this administration hates coal who know's how long that will last.I have a lot of friends in the mining buisness and they say permits are hard to come by.To compinsate they are re-openeing old mines and going deeper in existing mine's to compinsate which is much more dangerous. But in the end its about survival.

mistermunster - Come east! The state of RI gave Curt Schilling a 75 million dollar tax break to bring his game company to RI. It is supposed to bring 450 jobs by the end of 2012. Better hurry though, our new Governor is trying to repeal that deal.

I know somewhere on one of the threads it say stay positive no negitve comments..
Why Not.. Frankly I would go into the mines right now... Our goverment is not coming to the rescue. We have been hung out to die... Over 50 forget it... if we go away they can keep our SSI for the next generation. I am so done with thinking my extension is coming and that the congress even gives a damn the same with all the MEDIA 99ers are news for a minute. Then on to Charlie Sheen or Linsey.. They got more press then Lybia.. why would the 99ers.. They need us to go away an election year is coming... and if the HR589 passed they ALL would have to admit that unemployment is higher then they "Media and the Numbers guys in Washington" are full of hot air... Wont happen..... Just a side note... off my soap box...
During the Great Depression ( the other one) the REAL indicator that things were bad was population... new babies were way down people didnt have children they couldnt afford them.. Anyone hear the news this week???

Baby Boomers: America's new unemployables
Despite improving job data, older unemployed workers are having more trouble finding work, as companies favor less-experienced, cheaper candidates

I had read that earlier. I love the way they are so nonchalant about the fact that workers over 50 may never find suitable employment again.
Our work ethic, experience and knowledge surpasses that of the younger worker - I don't mean to offend and not saying this in a negative manner - yet because the cost of employing us, as well as higher benefit premiums, we will be lucky to find a job flipping burgers. Oh, no....probably not - we are "overqualified"!
I think of all the stories I have read about unemployment, including those that call us lazy, this one has enraged me the most.

i agree why isnt there an uproar from coast to coast? i dont get it. no one talks about it or offers any solutions. we're just written off....oh well things have changed. well paying bills and feeding kids hasnt changed and we need jobs. we didnt cause this mess but we are the casualties of it while those who did create it have survived and thrived at our expense!

This is the problem with this whole situation. Goons in the Glen Beck Brigade and the rest of their ilk THINK this is JUST FINE.
As long as they HAVE theirs, the HELL with you. Then they compound the problem by spinning lies and propaganda that YOU are the PROBLEM and should have NOTHING. How do you deal with this without using violence? Anybody??? This is the impasse this nation faces.
