*Update 3/18/11* New Action Needed by 99ers to help pass H.R. 589!
First topic message reminder :
Dear 99ers:
There are currently 75 Democrat co-sponsors of H.R. 589.
And not one Republican has committed to co-sponsor this bill.
Yet in the House of Representatives there are 193 Democrats and 242 Republicans.
So 75 Democrat cosponsors is a drop in the bucket.
So besides contacting our Republican representatives we need to still work on the Democrats as well.
This is our one chance to get extended unemployment benefits for the 99ers.
Lets not blow this chance.
Lets put every effort into contacting both our Democrat and Republican Congressmen and urge them to cosponsor this bill.
And don't forget the Speaker of the House Boehner. www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.shtml
Remember Reps Barbara Lee and Bobby Scott requested our help to get their bill passed in the House.
Once it passes the House and goes to the Senate it will be a whole new ball game there with the Democrats in the majority in the Senate.
The hardest battle is getting support for this bill in the House were the majority are Republicans.
So please keep contacting your Congressmen.
We must not let up if we want to win this fight for unemployment benefits.
Below is the link to the site that lists the contact info for every Congressman.

Re: *Update 3/18/11* New Action Needed by 99ers to help pass H.R. 589!
I want to help more. Can anyone give me some suggestions or point me in the right direction? I have contacted members of the senate in the past but honestly I got sick of not getting a response and have not done as much as I should.
Can anyone offer me some tips or more info on what I can do.

Re: *Update 3/18/11* New Action Needed by 99ers to help pass H.R. 589!
Nuwanda, thanks for asking. We need all members to keep contacting the Democratic Reps. asking for additional co-sponsors. We need all members to continue emailing, faxing and tweeting the Republicans as well. Tell them your story, send the 99ers letter (please sign if you haven't already), join the 99ers union and send a copy of their letter.
This is not the time for us to quiet down. We only have each other to get this done. As Gregg and Carol get more information they will post.
We know it's a lot to ask of everyone, since we have been doing it for so long, but we HAVE to keep up the pressure. It's just too damn important.
We need benefits, we need JOBS, we need Job Creation (the real kind) and we need an end to the discrimination in hiring practices.
Please, please all, join us.
Nuwanda, see the HR589 Threads, there you will find the information you need to get you going. If you have any questions, please just ask me or any of the Moderators and Admins.

Re: *Update 3/18/11* New Action Needed by 99ers to help pass H.R. 589!
Hi Nuwanda, to add what Mary Kay has put forth...
I'm not the authority as others are on this site, but I would suggest a
set of standard questions, similar to what we've been talking about earlier in
this thread. These questions would be to interview in a brief period of time and would be tailored to the individual's stance - such as co-sponsoring Dems, Dems still to enlist, Rep. Lee, Repubs, President Obama, AND REP. CAMP for sure.
Using these questions and the answers we receive, we can post who we talked to and their responses. I think this would be very interesting to determine what's going on right now and for once we can determine where we stand... or where they don't stand.
We should also be prepared to provide perhaps the top 10 positive actions we individually would do with this additional 14 weeks and how these actions would be different than the past. Very short but personal.
Sorry I have to buzz off to do a job submit and my head is bursting and I'm seeing double!
Other members, I hope you will address the strategies provided here so we can be most equipped and unified as a team.
Thanks... Jaxxy

p.s. It would be great to see some quick brainstorming tonight so that an action plan can be formed to make best use of this coming week. Don't be shy!
The milestone for next week is to flush this bill back out to the forefront and have our Congress on high alert when they return to Washington. We all have our different circumstances but as a team we have this one very important milestone to achieve.
Let's do it!
Thanks.

First, I think we need to contact all the Democrats not yet signed up to co-sponsor, as as stated above, if they won't, why. This would require phone calls more than an email request. I think the emails should continue however.
Next we contact the Republicans, we need their support as well. Same idea, will you sponsor, if not why.
I also think, due to budget cut backs and limited funds now coming to the states, the Governor's are who we need to hit as well.
Also, Secretary of Labor for each state. Sandy Vito in PA has been on our side since early March last year and has been vocal in PA. Contact your Secretary, send your story.
That's where I would start.

MaryKay, I really like your prioritization. Can I just suggest one insert, hopefully as the very first contact. Unless I'm off base, contacting Rep. Camp might shed some light or give us answers that we can relay to the Democrats... such as "did you know the reason why the meeting hasn't taken place? According to Rep. Camp, it's because...."
Rep. Camp, why have you not responded to Rep. Lee?
Rep. Camp, what date can we expect your response to Rep. Lee?
Rep. Camp, is someone holding you back from this response or is this
lack of response entirely your decision and do you know what daily
consequences this lack of duty has had?
Rep. Camp, what criteria do you use to determine the swiftness of your responses?

Yes indeed, flood the telecom circuits! I was just talking to a well known "friend of the unemployed" and he said that volume does really seem to be the suggested approach from Sen. Lee.
So DesperateInRI has put out the info... let's do any and everything to get this baby on it's feet!
I'm tired. Good night!

I find that to be the case X...even though it may not seem like much, faxing, tweeting etc., It really does speak volumes. The more phone calls and faxes they get, the more likely they are to do something.
We cant afford to rally together from all over the country so this is the next best thing IMO. Its better than doing nothing!!

Re: *Update 3/18/11* New Action Needed by 99ers to help pass H.R. 589!
Thanks X and S&T for all your continued help. I started about an hour ago.
I feel right now that any and all suggestions are a good thing. I also feel we need to contact Camp. He is included in my emails to the entire Ways and Means.
Please include your stories, any other correspondence you feel you want to include and if you wish, help me with the letter.
I am also stressing in these emails and faxes and phones calls what organizations we belong to. We need them to see us as individuals and as the large group we sadly have become.
With the lack of coverage and feed-back we are receiving right now, I think the press needs to be contacted again. If you have time, include them in your daily correspondence, even if it's just your local tv stations, radio stations and your favorite National News coverage. If we each do a little, the word is getting out.
With emotions running so high right now and this battle of ours dragging on so long, it would be easy to give in to taking a demanding tone or bashing, please make sure your correspondence is written with the respect we expect to receive. We are the bigger people and we need to reflect that, as hard as it may be.
Back to the emails. Thanks everyone for continuing on, we need to, it's our lives and the lives of our loved ones depending on this.
Prayers for all of us, the unemployed, the 99ers and all people who need help right now around the world.

Is anyone getting any positive responses or feedback? All I seem to get are form letters that don't really address the issue.

Yeah, you just gotta love those form letters! I wish just one politician would send a real letter telling the truth of the situation even if it said "I really dont know the answer".
These form letters are so cold and so phony. I just want something real and written with genuine emotions.

I think the form letters are almost an auto-response. But I am working the Republicans today. Speaker Boehner asked all to "tout job creation" so I am working that side of the aisle. Please join me.
