NOW IS THE TIME TO STOP MORE NUCLEAR POWER IN U.S.
NUCLEAR SITUATION IN JAPAN DETERIORATING
MULTIPLE MELTDOWNS AND FUEL POOL RELEASES LIKELY
NOW IS THE TIME TO STOP MORE NUCLEAR POWER IN U.S.
March 16, 2011
The situation at the Fukushima nuclear site in Japan continues to deteriorate. We are now looking at the very real possibility--even likelihood--of multiple reactor meltdowns coupled with multiple failures of irradiated fuel pools. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan at this hour.
We are posting updates as fast as we can obtain reliable information on our website: www.nirs.org as well as on Facebook and Twitter (addresses below). Please check often for new information.
The lesson of this catastrophe is clear: we must end use of nuclear power.
And that must start with the prevention of any new nuclear reactors. It is outrageous that the Obama Administration continues to say nuclear power will be part of its "clean energy" strategy, and that congressional Democrats in Washington are supporting that position. How anyone can view the images coming from Japan and continue to claim nuclear power is somehow "clean" is beyond our ability to comprehend.
If ever there was a time for Congress to hear our voice, it is now.
We have set up a new, short, and to-the-point sample letter for you to send to your Congressional officials now. We're asking you--and everyone you know--to act now. We have never needed a larger public outpouring and more outreach.
Please help us spread the word. Your contributions are urgently needed to enable us to do the kind of outreach so desperately needed right now. As just one example, we should be on every progressive blog and website in the country right now with ads that encourage and enable people to act; please help us do that with your contribution now or after you take action.
We will be taking more actions in the days and weeks to come. And we won't be focusing on just stopping new reactors. For starters, the 23 General Electric Mark I reactors--the same design that has failed so catastrophically in Japan--must be closed. We will be working with grassroots groups across the country to develop new strategies and tactics on many more issues to bring us closer--and faster--to a safe, clean and affordable nuclear-free, carbon-free energy future.
Thanks for all you do,

Re: NOW IS THE TIME TO STOP MORE NUCLEAR POWER IN U.S.
Thanks for the info. I live within a hundred miles of three nuclear plants and one of them is on the "endangered list". The Pilgrim Nuclear plant in MA.

Actually, U.S. regulators are stepping up their efforts to review reactor safety:

Where do they dispose of all that nuclear waste?
They will never be completely safe. There is always the chance they will have a disaster like the one in Japan. People will always live with the stress of wondering if and when this will happen to us here in the US or other countries. I read that since the Japan tragedy other countries are thinking twice about expanding their nuclear power plants. And may start searching for some other source of energy.
Something else to think about.
Where do they dispose of all that nuclear waste ?
They are burying this radio active stuff all over the US.
Eventually they will run out of places to dispose of this nuclear waste.
And it will be dangerous for thousands of years.
This is making our country more contaminated and even our oceans that way in areas near those nuclear plants. I do not like the idea of eating fish that glow in the dark.

How close is your home to a nuclear power plant?
Just type in your zipcode and it will give you the information. I just checked it. I thought it was only 3 in my area - it is 5!

DesperateInRI,
Thanks for posting that link.
I was shocked to see how many nuclear plants there are in California.
Our state is surrounded by them.
Actually this map does not show all of the nuclear plants in California, nor in the other states either.
There is another map that shows all of the nuclear plants we have.
it was the map I posted that shows the radiation activity in each state.
But I deleted the map I posted the other day because some people were saying we should not be concerned about the radioactive cloud that will be coming to Southern California.

I never realized how many were in my area either. It is pretty scary.

Re: NOW IS THE TIME TO STOP MORE NUCLEAR POWER IN U.S.
I just put in my zip code and I am near 5 too. The closest is only 47 miles away and the furthest is 120 miles. It looks like two of the sites have two or more reactors. I think we better start finding alternatives to nuclear power because eventually something is going to happen as these plants get older. The crisis in Japan has really opened my eyes.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — U.S. and California officials sought Friday to dispel fears of a wider danger from radioactivity spewing from Japan's crippled nuclear reactors, saying testing indicated there were no health threats along the West Coast of the U.S.
Driven by winds over the Pacific Ocean, a radioactive plume released from the Fukushima Dai-ichi reached Southern California on Friday, heightening concerns that Japan's nuclear disaster was assuming international proportions.
