Emotional Speech by Rep. Elijah Cummings on GOP Vote to End Foreclosure Help

Post by Guest on Fri Mar 11, 2011 5:12 pm

Today the House GOP voted to end foreclosure assistance. There were several emotional points made on the floor by CBC Reps. Elijah Cummings and Maxine Waters. Several members compared the irony of what’s happening with this issue to how the House voted in favor of bailing banks out to the tune of $700 billion in late 2008. Many of the same members who voted for the $700 billion bank bailout voted to end programs to assist homeowners with foreclosure today. Rep. Elijah Cummings’ floor speech was one of the most forceful of the debate this morning.

This emotional speech is worth watching. Rep. Elijah Cummings [D-MD] is truly the voice for his constituents!

Two questions...Will it pass the Senate? If it does will Obama sign it into law?

That bill will not go to the Senate, it was defeated in the House. In order for the foreclosure help to continue, the Senate would have to introduce a bill now, approve it and try again to get it through the House. Sad

Duh! Stupid me...of course it wouldn't go to the Senate! What do you think the chances are the Senate will introduce a new bill?

At this point with all the battles over budget cuts, IMO, I don't think the chances are too good. Evil or Very Mad

What I truly do not understand is with the inventory of unsold homes just sitting, what do they hope to gain by not helping people stay in their homes. It's not like these foreclosures are being sold quickly, just the opposite. Rewriting some of these mortgages is keeping people in their homes and at least money is being paid toward these mortgages, once foreclosed, they sit and the banks get nothing. Areas become more and more depressed, housing values decline. I don't get it.
