Unemployment is Right Around the Corner Empty Unemployment is Right Around the Corner

Post by nfpexec Mon Dec 10, 2012 6:42 pm

I started posting on this site back in 2010. I sincerely hope that most of the people I met then are now employed and moved on with their lives. After more than 3 years of unemployment, few interviews, returning to school & running up new student loans, I finally got a temporary 5 month job that paid decently. I was most concerned that I could get back onto a normal schedule of going to bed before 4 AM and going to work. I also hoped that I would find something before the time ran out. Well I'm down to my last 2 weeks and my phone is as dead as it was for the last 3 1/2 years. My resumes still seem to go into a black hole. I was optimistic a few weeks ago when someone who interviewed me a year ago called about another position. The pay was good but no benefits. I was still willing to take the job to dig myself out of this financial hole but they chose someone else, probably younger. So I was feeling more calm but now the anxiety is kicking in again. I had my first sleepless night last night and I'm feeling gloomy about 2013. School is going well but the cost is killing me. I fear that after a month or so I will be right back where I was when I first joined this site. Broke and depressed. The only glimmer of hope is the possibility of some additional unemployment but I'm not completely sure if i am eligible in NYS. Any little bit would help even if they no longer offer the longer extension. This is like going one step forward and two steps backwards. So frustrating.

I know how you feel. I am also unsure of going back to school. But honestly, it can't hurt you these days. You can always fight the loans if you aren't hired after a period of time. Use this time to gain connections and take advantage of any career placement they can offer you in the meantime. And make sure you know your options in case you need a back up plan.

Yeah, this "jobless recovery" (if you can call it a recovery) is killing millions of people, and as far as the gainfully employed are concerned, the message is going in one ear and out the other. In their little world, the mild recession we were in ended in June of 2009!

LMAO

If on an interview you mention anything about the collapse of the American economy in 2007 to explain your spotty work history since that time, they look at you as if you have 10 heads, pretending it never happened!

You hit the nail on the head, jmain!! I have been getting quite a few phone call from potential employers and recruiters lately because I submit my resume without employment dates. The minute they ask when my last job ended, and I answer "2008", there is silence on the other end and I never hear from them again. My credentials were good enough to get their attention out of the hundreds of resumes they receive for that one job opening, what makes them think I can't still do the same?? I'm beginning to understand what a "discouraged worker who has given up looking" is.

Desp,

They're acting as if the economy is doing well, and that nobody was, or should have been affected by the downturn. It just infuriates me as to what these companies are getting away with, not only with the hiring process, but with the enormous workload employees are forced to endure.

I feel everyone's pain. Its so frustrating. I just got a xmas card from an old friend and I had told her about my plight. She said don't worry you always find a job. Well that USED to be the case. It ain't that way no more! I don't even know what to do anymore as I've sent out hundreds of resumes and not a peep. Now that my temp job ended, I will be applying for UI to carry me over the hump, but this time I am preparing for the UI running out. I am continuing with school (on the dean's list), not focus on the student loans and doing some volunteer work in fields of interest so I can network and get some new references. I heard this week that companies are more apt to hire someone with a criminal background than someone who had been out of work for an extended period of time. UNBELIEVABLE!

"They are apt to hire someone with criminal background vs someone thats unemployed for a period of time"...WOW. I read somewhere yesterday that when the economy was thriving...it took an average of 3 interviews to land a job. But now in this economy...it takes on average 17 interviews to land a job. Ummmm so that means I have about 10 more to go????? Shocked

I had not heard this, but I completely believe it, if only based on some people I've met who are currently employed. Their only skill is managing to jump ship before they get the ax! I suspected my lack of steady employment has been hurting me lately with getting interviews... It HAS to be more suspicious than not having any work at all. But I think if I can land some interviews, they will question why no one ever hung onto me.

I would settle for getting interviews, period.

Yeah me too. In fact I was offered jobs while working at a job. I wish I took the offers now looking back in hindsight but I was to loyal and enjoyed the job until the boss went weird and laid everyone off when the economy went bye bye.

Sometimes I think economic down-turns are self-fulfilling. You have these employers who are basically Henny Pennies and cry that the sky is falling, even before anything bad happens.

Unemployment is Right Around the Corner Empty Re: Unemployment is Right Around the Corner

Post by nfpexec Sun Jan 27, 2013 2:05 am

Well I'm back. After a six month temp job I am officially unemployed again. Naively I thought I might find something during my temp job but I had NO interviews during that six months even though I continued sending out resumes. Very disappointing. Since the job ended I had two interviews. One was for a job I applied for a year ago. I thought that might be a strong possibility but they rejected me again! I sent an email and asked them not to contact me again. I felt so jerked around. Two weeks and already I'm exhausted. The only reason I can sleep eat and am not completely depressed is that I still have money in the bank. I tried to file for unemployment this week in NY. I completed the online application and got a message saying I had to complete the claim by speaking to the DOL. I called three days in a row only to either be put on hold for an hour or told to call back another day. What is with these people?? I can't get any benefits until the claim is completed and I can get it completed until I speak to someone. I've been very angry because I need that money to pay my daily expenses otherwise I am spending the money I just earned which will put me right back on the brink of financial ruin. Man you can't win no matter what you do here.

I am now in a similar situtaion, i have had three contracts of one month
to three month duration....

i applied for unemploymrnt after the last three month contract and was turned down because i was ONE week short of minimum requirement..

now after a two and a half month down time and FOUR months of contract work i JUST applied again and am waiting for determination...

Actually when I applied the first time i had aditional UNcovered employment as it was non-W2, that put me over the minimum, but proving the misclassification and all was a big problem

I now have 29 weeks of employment (20 weeks is the min)...so everthong SHOULD go well....we shall see....

That is so frustrating. I don't know why they have to make this soooooo hard when they know what we're up against. I will try to get through on the phone again but if I can't get through I will show up in person because I need the money until something else comes along.

I filed for UI in January. I was told to complete my claim by phone. I was on hold for more than an hour. I hung up, called back and got a message telling me to call back another day. So i did and the same thing happened. I sent an email to the NYS DOL in Albany. Meanwhile I called every day to try and complete my claim. I finally got through after being on hold for an hour again but I couldnt hang up. The woman goes through all the information and says that my former employer didnt enter any wage information for me. I had just completed filing taxes so I could get a refund so how could there be no record of earnings? So here I sit two weeks since the phone call to DOL and nothing. Last friday I got an email from Albany asking me to send copies of my W2s from July, Sept & Dec. WHICH I ALREADY DID....I must calm down because this is giving me ulcers and I can't afford to see a doctor. I'm crossing my fingers for the interview tomorrow because this nightmare HAS TO END!!!!!!

i filled on Jan 25th of jan 2013, and this last sunday my claim got an amount allocated to it, and a pending weekly check.

in Ohio one files online and they have all the places you worked listed with number of weeks and monetary amount. also an option to search (by fein if i remember right) for the current quarter.

of course the money is credited to an expired benefit card. I called them and am waiting for NEW card.....(3-5 business days),it is always something (no actual money yet)

Naively I thought this was going to be a straight forward process but I should've known better. I had an interview today and while I don't know the salary or benefits, I've reached the point where I just need a steady permanent flow of income. They contacted me for a second interview and that hasn't happened in almost two years! I don't want to think about it too much but I bet I won't get any sleep tonight. I've been reading about all of the cutbacks to UI in various states so I just want out of this mess. Back in 2008 I could NEVER have imagined I'd still be looking all these YEARS later.
